“An out of the way place that's worth it.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

We went out to Serpent Mound for an afternoon day trip. The mound was a bit smaller than any of us expected, but it was still quite impressive. We started at the visitor's center and then went to the tower to see the shape from above. You can visit the site in about 45 minutes, but there is also a nice, easy hiking trail that circles the site and drops into the ancient crater. That takes another 40 minutes or so, and was very do able by a six year old kid. One note... there is no real food places nearby, so if you go for the day, pack a lunch and eat at one of the picnic tables at the site. The gift shop and museum is not very interesting, but the docents there seem to know the history well. Parking is $7 and that's the only "entrance" fee.

“Worth a detour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2013

This was a very peaceful break in our car trip across Ohio from Cincinnati. There is a lookout tower, which you should definitely climb, so that you can get more perspective on this Native American burial mound (in the shape of a snake). There is a gift shop and small museum, neither of which had anything interesting to offer. But the tower and the trail which followed the snake from head to toe (or the snake equivalent) was really good.

“interesting place to explore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2013

An interesting place to explore. We started in the gift shop and museum then climbed the tower to get a full view of the mound before walking the path around it. There are also places along the path to view the beautiful scenery that surrounds the mound. It is such a peaceful area. We went in the fall and the trees were beautiful. You will find a nice picnic area a and shelter house as well.

“Only one like it in the world”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

We made a fall vacation to Ohio around a visit to Serpent Mound, because we've always wanted to see it - and it's amazing! How could anyone even think of such a thing? Located on a plateau, the snake is 1,330 feet long and averages about 3 feet in height. From a coiled tail the mound-serpent body weaves back and forth to the head with an open mouth and a sphere in front, and looks out over a deep valley. We spent about two hours there in the museum and gift shop, hiking one trail and looking at the serpent and talking about it with other visitors. We've visited other mound sites as well as Anasazi sites in the Southwest, and we find them interesting, so added to that was the appeal of this site as the only one in the world. We're glad we made it part of our trip. Belonging to an historical society, the site was open during the recent federal government shutdown.

“An Interesting Native American Mound Builder Site”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

A park with a museum, restrooms, a gift shop and a chance to see a large and unusual mound in the shape of a snake. Built by ancient native Americans thousands of years ago, the purpose of this snake effigy is largely unknown. You can climb a watchtower about thirty feet high to get a better look at the shape of the mound because from the ground, the shape is hard to see. The park has a shelter and small picnic area. There is also a hiking trail that leads down to a nearby stream. It's about an hour and a half drive from Cincinnati and a must see for anyone interested in the mound builder culture in Ohio
