“Consistent mediocrity”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

It's a shame that Oberlin doesn't have a decent hotel or inn in the town, but alas such is the case. The Oberlin Inn is ideally located right in the center of town, but the hotel is a disappointment in almost every respect. The building (I'm guessing 1960's vintage - it replaced an older hotel on the same location) is a cinder block and brick affair utterly without charm. The restaurant doesn't merit a visit - period. The bar is awful.
There are plans to replace the current structure with a new building, which will hopefully at least relieve the architectural boredom of the current building. However, unless the management of the place is completely re-structured, I doubt things are likely to improve.

Room Tip: Avoid the place completely.

Someone's making a lot of money, because none of it has been put back into updating the rooms since the 1960s. We learned that although the university owns the Inn, it is managed by a second party. This is a convenient arrangement that facilitates passing the buck. How can such an esteemed college not be totally embarrassed by this tacky, low quality establishment? Do they put visiting artists and scholars there?
Aside from the mildew around the edges of the wallpaper in the bathroom, the dust in the creases of the lampshades (mounted above the coffee maker), and the windows, which were filthy inside and out, the room appeared clean. Beyond that, the decor was 1960s Grandma's basement. Furniture was cheap and old. Not old enough to have character, just old and tired. Lampshades were dented and askew on discount-outlet "modern" brass finish sconces and lamps. Clunky desk and dresser had faux wood grain formica-tops. Wallpaper throughout was peeling and stained. Pictures on the walls were so old that the pigment had faded to a barely visible pastel. Desk chair had at some point been broken and roughly glued back together. Towels and washcloths were thin and threadbare. Bed pillows were lumpy miniatures. Table lamp cord was stretched to straining to reach the only outlet, which it shared with a short powerstrip that accommodated the TV and coffee-maker. The television, however, was not plugged in, forcing the guest to reach awkwardly behind the heavy dresser to access the cord and outlet (liability issues here?). The cable signal provided a striped, snow-textured image on nearly every channel. Lacking sheers on the window, the drapes either blocked all natural light, or when opened, provided no privacy. The radiator, although turned off, unnecessarily pumped out heat through the night.
When checking out, the Sphinx-like desk attendant avoided eye-contact, showed no interest in our well-being or the quality of our stay, and with an impressive economy of words handed me a bill showing a different total than the one that was emailed to me from the Inn's own website.
Overall, a most disappointing stay, particularly considering the many, many thousands of dollars parents send to Oberlin.

The ownership and management are both aware that the Oberlin Inn is dated and in need of updating. The fact is, a study is being completed on the facility to see what is in the best interest of ownership, to rehab or rebuild. Your business is appreciated as well as your comments.

I visited the Oberlin Inn while my daughter was visiting the college. The Inn has a great location right next to the campus. The room was a bit dated and the fixtures were a bit worn, but it was very clean and the staff was helpful and friendly. The on-site restaurant is fine, not exactly gourmet, but solid and reasonably priced. The hotel bar is one of two in town and looks inviting enough for a couple of brews. There are several B&Bs in town, but for my money this would be the best place to stay in Oberlin.

We went for an activety in Oberlin and went to the Oberlin Inn. We had a meal at the restaurant, could not cut the bread with a knife could not eat the food and they charge us $65. for one of the worst meals I have had in my life. The place was not clean and I felt dirty when I was there.
Over all HORRIBLE

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else you will be glad you did

Recently, I had some hard times and a local Church put me up in a room at the Oberlin Inn. Being local, I've never thought about staying here because I've never needed a play to stay. Until now. When I needed a place in my time of need the staff gave me a room. Cooperated with the Church for payment and are all around a nice group of people. I can't say enough positive things about this place. Sure, it could use some updating but the rooms are clean. Had anyone leaving bad reviews bothered to ask the staff about renovations to the building they'd learn there are going to be renovations, they just don't know when or how. I stayed here for 2 weeks straight. Didn't have any problems with bed bugs and have no complaints. Oh, there was also a pen and paper in my room. You didn't find one in yours? Boo hoo. The Oberlin Inn is an asset to our community.

Oberlin Inn may need updating but it is the place to stay while visiting Oberlin College. It is within walking distance to the campus and the Allen Memorial Art Myseum. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are very clean. I have stay at the Inn at different times and always found it to be as welcoming.

I couple if years ago I did encounter a bed bug problem but found the manager incredibly helpful and addressed the problem immediately. I have been back many times since and have never experienced the problem again. During my last stay I was happy to see they have added flat screen televisions for all the rooms. I look forward to my next visit to Oberlin Inn.

I attended Oberlin and the hotel has not change in almost 20 years. The location is excellent and the room seemed clean. However, I travel often for professional conferences, and Oberlin really does need to step it up and either heavily renovate or build a hotel and conference facility that suits business travelers and parents. Patrons paying good dollars for a room really do want upscale linens, updated furnishings and bathrooms. I had been to this hotel a few times over the years and knew that it was similar to a budget hotel, but in 2012 it is time for the college to upgrade their lodging facilities on campus.
