“Better than average just.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

Came here for a birthday treat from my children. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, drinks and menus appeared very quickly. The food was excellent the rolled shoulder of lamb superb, as were all the other dishes. However now for the downside, the service was so slow that seven people out of ten had to leave before dessert or coffee. I would like to return when I have more time to spare.

“Much improved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

This place has always promised much but failed to deliver. However, over the last few months the food quality and choice is much better. They always have an interesting specials board too. Recommended.

“You don't need a compass to find this little Jem in the Essex countryside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013 via mobile

We visited the compasses for a birthday meal on a Saturday afternoon
We were greeted with smiles from the staff behind the bar, offered a cool drink and shown to our table
The restaurant was airy, bright and spotlessly clean. The waitress who was serving us was cheerful bubbly and happy to tell us about the food on offer.
We had four separate starters and four separate mains and the timings were perfect , the food was cooked to perfection full of flavour.
There was a good selection of beers and ales on draft and the wine list had some quality grapes on offer
The prices were what you would expect to pay
It was nice to see that all the staff were happy in their jobs
All in all a very nice atmosphere and pleasant enjoyable afternoon

We will return ..

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013 via mobile

After being recommended by a friend we decided to give The Compasses a try. We did not have a booking but they were very happy to accommodate us in the pub area. The service was quite slow. The starters were pleasant but not outstanding. My husband had fish and chips which he said was pretty average, I ordered the roast lamb dinner. I was very disappointed as the lamb was so fatty and inedible. The waitress was very apologetic and did not charge us for it. Would not rush back.

“What a nice surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

Went to the Compasses yesterday for a lunch as a treat for my mother-in-law for her birthday, originally recommended by some close friends, after reading some of the mix reviews I was sceptical, but after all there was no need at all to worry as it is really lovely, I was really impressed...

The restaurant itself is quite rustic and full of country charm but done in a modern way, its also really well lit and set out, there is a small but intimate bar area where we initially sat and had drinks before moving through to the main dining area which is segmented in to a few different area's to make the ambience more personal without being to isolated...

Also outside is a lovely garden area with benches and some apparatus and a bouncy castle for the kids to play on...

Staff were extremely friendly and attentive, food was really good with a good choice without being to over run with dishes, there was also a specials board, I had Pigeon breast with black pudding and beatroot followed by Venison with celeriac mash and walnuts, dessert was the highlight for me, not saying that the other dishes were not good as they were, but it was a divine White chocolate and strawberry cheese cake which was purely a cut above the other dishes, some of the other dishes on the table was the gnocchi and the cheese burger etc all dishes were really good...

There were 4 adults and 2 young children, we had drinks at the bar, 2 starters, 4 mains, 1 kids meals 3 desserts plus coffees, wine and some other drinks and the bill was a touch over £130, which I felt was really good, in fact I was surprised that it was that cheap...

Overall I was really impressed with the Compasses, its a charming and relaxed restaurant well away from the hustle and bustle to allow you to relax and enjoy some lovely food from a well thought out menu.......

Compasses we will meet again very soon!
