“Wait until construction is finished before renting a cottage.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2011

We were in Cottage 23. Cottages 21-41 are near a construction site. The parking lot at the turnaround at the end of the access road, by our unit, was full of pallets of building material and heavy equipment. Very UN-scenic! Sure enough, at 7AM the crew got started warming up their machines. By 7:12, all you could hear was engine rumble and the beep... beep... beep... of equipment going in reverse.

The cottage needs some remodeling, as it seems over-used. Amenities include microwave and coffee-maker in the kitchen (bring your own filters), a TV with VHS/DVD-player and fireplace in the living room. The master bedroom also has a fireplace. The weight of the stone fireplaces has caused the floors to sag into them a bit. Bathroom is OK; shower is a bit small and the curtain doesn't cover the opening well. All of the cabins are rather close to each other with few, if any, trees in between.

Oh, and the drapes are poorly lined, so unless you bring an eye-mask, be prepared to awaken at "dawn's early light."

As another posted has written, gas-up before heading in and bring food, beverage, etc. with you as the nearby convenience store has an understandably limited selection.

All in all, we were disappointed by the unit. Park staff should not rent out the units until the building project is complete. There is another section of cottages that should be used exclusively until then.

“Would return”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2011

My family, including a 10-year old and 1-year-old, stayed in one of the cabins (Cabin 5) for 4 nights in August.

I didn't really know what to expect based on what I could find on the internet. The cabins are cute, but dark. They have nice covered decks and are supplied with plates, pots and pans, colander, utensils, knives, automatic coffee pot, soap, towels, sheets, and blankets. For the price, I felt that the cabin was a good value. It was spacious and comfortable for our family to spend a rainy day and evenings. My husband and I would have been happier in a queen-size bed, though.

The cabin comes with a charcoal grill and a fire pit. The fire pit for our cabin was almost unusable since it was on a hill. We could not sit chairs around the fire without being on a ridiculous angle. This seemed to be the case for at least cabins 1-6. The cabins are not terribly secluded from one another, but I didn't really notice or hear my neighbors. The back of the cabins is all wooded.

None of the cabins have a view of the lake. We also were unable to find a good path around the lake. We were hoping to be able to hike around the lake and to the beach from our cabin; that really wasn't feasible.

August is not a good time to visit. The lake had toxic algae -- some people were still swimming, but I wasn't going to let my baby swim in the water. Apparently, the lake frequently has algae blooms in August.

August is also very buggy. We had so many bites on our legs that we thought the place was infested with bedbugs -- we found no evidence of bedbugs, though. I think they were actually midge bites.

We enjoyed renting a canoe and canoeing around the lake. We also enjoyed access to Hocking Hills for hiking and Athens for dinner.

Overall, it was a great place for a family to spend several nights. Don't forget your charcoal and bugspray and bring spare towels.

“A few days at Lake Hope”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2011

We stayed 2 nights in a cabin within Lake Hope State Park. Bring your own food since there are no places to dine close by. Keep you tank above 1/2 since no gas stations are close by either if you plan to drive a lot. Our cabin had a full kitchen, and was pet friendly. The cabin was clean overall, but needed a good dusting. There is a good place to swim, plenty of hiking trails, and if your in to photography as we are, Hoking Hills State Park is close by to visit. There are some interesting geological formations to shoot there.
