“Lovely City Hotel Find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

We had a lovely stay at this small city hotel in the heart of Lancaster, Ohio, to celebrate a wedding anniversary. With a choice of 25 rooms, each lovingly decorated individually, our Louis XIV room was spacious, spotlessly clean, with a lovely view of the autumn ridge line and vintage old homes and churches. The two-person jacuzzi tub was especially appreciated as we relaxed before dinner in Shaw's Restaurant. While the bathroom was on the small side, there was a nice assortment of toiletries, thick towels, and marble floors and walls. This get-away weekend included a very generous assortment of breakfast choices the next morning. This place is a good find and deserves its Select Registry designation. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. My only complaint was that the small coffee maker in the room was basically useless, as half of the water needed for a pot of morning coffee leaked all over the tray on which it was sitting. Fortunately, there was brewed coffee and hot water for tea provided on the 4th floor for their guests. Our next trip here will probably be combined with a Saturday morning cooking class at the Shaw's Cooking School!

We booked a weekend at Shaw's Inn for my birthday so we could spend Saturday hiking at Hocking Hills. Unfortunately there wasn't any live music outside the hotel that Friday night and we were a little disappointed in the town itself. There wasn't much to see, except we did go to General Sherman's home which is a short walk away. But the Inn did not disappoint! The staff was really friendly. We stayed in the Nantucket Room on the 5th floor. Very comfortable, clean, and tasefully decorated--simple and homey--very New England. The bed was super comfortable. We had the fan continuously running (didn't even need the air conditioner since the hotel air was centrally cooled) so noise from the street, as reported by some other reviewers, was non-existant. The best part. though, was the food. For breakfast (included in the room price): I had the raison bread French toast Saturday morning (awesome!) and we both had Eggs Benedict on Sunday (get it with the ham--excellent!). Saturday night (not included) was shrimp cocktail, filet mignon, and baked potatoe--all perfectly done. Desert was a "fluffernutter" chocolate cake that was out of this world. And they give you these delicious cinnamon rolls as an appetizer. Yum! We will be back to Shaw's, perhaps to check out some of the other rooms. I would also go on a Friday when there is live music or some other kind of event--that would have been enjoyable!

Room Tip: The Nantucket Room was nice--I think it was facing the parking lot which wasn't as noisy. You s...

My husband and I have been staying at Shaw's several times a year for many years now. With our schedules we are rarely able to take even a week's vacation, so we treat ourselves to a few weekends away. I think the relaxation begins as soon as we reach the parking lot. We typically stay in one of the jacuzzi rooms, and they are always comfortable and meticulously clean. This is not an especially "kid friendly" establishment, which is one reason it appeals to us. The restaurant has a wonderful menu, and an outstanding wine list. I have never had a meal that wasn't excellent. There is a bar on the premises, Cork's Bar, which is a great place for before or after dinner cocktails. Quiet and dimly lit, it fits in very well with the general "feel" of the establishment. The staff is always pleasant and efficient, the surroundings have a gentle elegance, and the meals are always excellent. Breakfast is included in the price of your room, and you always feel free to relax and linger over coffee. The bar and restaurant are open to the public, and the brisk business they do is a testament to the quality of the food and service. I really can't recommend Shaw's Inn highly enough.

My wife and I stayed at this bed and breakfast with another couple. The price was excellent for the location. I was expecting a small house but surprisingly walked into a building. The hallways are a bit tight, and only one elevator, but the building has a lot of charm, and the rooms feel like home.

The restaurant is the shining star about the experience. This restaurant had an excellent wine list, delicious beer selection including several local brews, and the food was to die for! My wife and I indulged in some very tasty scallops with an excellent side salad. Our friends enjoyed a delicious peppercorn bison ribeye and the biggest, tastiest pork chop I've ever seen. The food alone well makes this place worth the trip, but the live music on Fridays in the summer were an excellent addition to the ambiance and romance of the quiet cute little town.

Room Tip: Go for the suites, they're much roomier and are much more romantic.

We were looking for a place to stay in the Hocking Hills area so we could spend a day at Lilyfest and things were pretty booked up nearby so when Shaw's came up we didn't know it was there or anything about it, but booked two nights. We were delighted to find a very old but well kept hotel in the heart of historic Lancaster. Our room was called Venice and we liked it very much. We had a big king bed and the mattress was very comfortable. There was a large sauna bathtub in the room that we found to be a little too small for two (we are thin), but very nice for one. Included in our stay was complimentary breakfasts in their historic dining room. Both mornings we had delicious breakfasts - the food is top notch. The second evening there was a band playing in the nearby gazebo - it was the British Invasion and drew a very large crowd. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Check out the rooms on their website - the higher priced ones are the nicest.

The hotel was built in 1941 so is hardly ancient but it does have a certain comfortable elegance from a different time. I stayed in one of the lower priced "corporate" rooms and it was small but suited me just fine and was classy, clean, and comfortable. More money will get you more space.

Both dinner and breakfast were excellent. Some of the service, as others have mentioned, was rather unimpressive. This may actually be a generational thing and possible the reverse of what you may be thinking. Some of the older staff seemed to have that "you're so lucky we're here" attitude I've seen in other "historic" establishments while younger staff members were quite attentive and friendly.

This was my second time here and, details of that other visit (2006) visit have faded but I remember it as enjoyable.

Decided to stay at Shaw's Inn and Restaurant after stopping in for a lunch on the way down to southern OH on a previous trip. I noted that it was a Select Registry Inn and the the crab cake at lunch had been delicious. Plus, we enjoyed the architecture and a bluegrass band was slated to play in the gazebo directly across from the hotel on the night we reserved. The room was charming and plenty big (we opted for one of the best suites they had - Savannah suite). The food was quite good. The service from managers was great, from the wait staff - not so much. The wait time for just a cup of coffee seemed extrordinary (10-15 min). However, the food was always good and the staff always quite polite. Things move at a slower pace here - small town, older clientele? Rented some bikes from a local bike shop (although had to ask around for awhile before we were able to locate a place) and had some wonderful excursions. We found a couple of charming parks and an excellent bike path. Overall - nice place with some charming museums and houses, nice people in management, but restaurant needs some efficiency training.
