“Dance at the Tropics”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Great little place to dance where the music does not blow your sox off. They have an excellent choice in bands that are normally extrememly dancible. There is never an entrance fee. Food and drinks are good but I have not been there yet for a full meal.

“Love this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

We visited The Tropics for the first time on Friday, February 1, during Restaurant Week. The food was fabulous. We chose the prime rib dinner and were very pleased with it. Some restaurants during Restaurant Week skimp on the portions, but not The Tropics. We brought part of our dinner home as we could not finish all of it. The music was great and the whole atmosphere is terrific. We will definitely go back. Kudos to the owner, Bill!

“Excellent restaurant in the neighborhood”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

We tried The Tropics last night and were very impressed. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was terrific and the prices were reasonable. To top it off, they have live music with no cover charge. The band was really very good and the sound was not so overpowering that you couldn't think. We were able to sit and have a conversation while enjoying the music. We will definitely be back again!

“Overall pretty good.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

Overall I'm a big fan of The Tropics--primarily because I live close by. I've been for lunch and dinner, but have always sat at the bar. The service generally is pretty good, though sometimes it can be a bit slow.

The food is pretty good, though some of the menu items seem a little overpriced.

Happy hour has good specials. The pizza is good (particularly during happy hour when it's half price).

Overall I think The Tropics is very good (it's only been open for a couple of months), and I think it will get better with time.

“The Tropics Restaurant in Lincoln Park is a winner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2012

The Tropics Restaurant in Lincoln Park is a winner.

Years ago, the leaders of the City of Kettering determined to developed a forested area that became Lincoln Park, a multiple use iresidence, commercial, and entertainment center located in the heart of Kettering.

We have been particularly fond of the original Harbor Lights, an upscale causal dining restaurant. During the past 30 years, Harbor Lights was replaced by several properties and the devolution of meals and service ensued.

In fall 2012, new owners associated with Peasant Stock Cafes (not the Peasant Stock) have assembled a SMART mid-class casual restaurant that seems to be functioning fine.

Lincoln Park and the Fraze should guarantee success IF the management and chef can follow through on this enterprise. The Tropics Restaurant has been on our radar all fall, and we decided dinner in would fit our schedule. Pure serendipity! The dining night was the Grand Illumination of Lincoln Park for the Christmas season. We enjoyed an excellent dinner, and garnered the best seats in The Tropics Restaurant for the Grand Illumination of Lincoln Park. Lincoln Park was a balmy 53 degrees and nearly 200 residents and children were greatly enjoying the Grand Illumination.

Whether or not one chooses dinner at The Tropics Restaurant, it is very pleasant to experience the gift of Christmas that Kettering has provided.

We were extremely fortunate to have as our server, a lady who “opened and closed” Harbor Lights. Our server is a real pro, and ask for the “Harbor Lights Server.” She knows the current menu and wine list to perfection.

We miss the more formal atmosphere, the glass tables, and the general ambience of Harbor Lights. Booths are a real mistake in a restaurant of glass walls. We do not “get” the name, The Tropics Restaurant. Neither the menu nor the theme of the restaurant suggests “tropics.”

The demographics of the diners suggest casual dress, families, couples, and small groups. The age groups included children, young adults, middle age, and “boomers.”

In general we prefer no background music, we did not care for the volume of the guitarist, and we did not stay for the live band that preformed at 8:00PM. The stage area seems a waste of great tables with views. We found the overhead lighting to be stark and much too bright. But all of these concerns are “fixable.”

The old bar is still packed, and the great patio is available in nice weather; in fact, given a few space heaters, this evening would have been fine for patio dining. As we departed at 7:00PM, every table at The Tropics Restaurant was filled, and there were 20 + people in the entry hall waiting for a table.

The Tropics Restaurant has a website, but the web-master has no clue how search engines work, and at present, one really must know some navigation “tricks” to find the website.

Happy hour, drinks, wine are all fairly standard. Look for two steaks and a Canadian Salmon. There is a variety of salads and hot and cold sandwiches. A couple might spend $60.00 with drinks or as little as $15.00 for “two value meals.”

Assessment: Management and chefs earn an A+. We always like a small menu. We can easily avoid the bar/TV ilk, and we look forward to patio dining. Add The Tropics Restaurant to your Friday or Saturday night schedule. The Tropics Restaurant is not quite a date with your wife, but we are glad to welcome The Tropics Restaurant to Lincoln Park. The Tropics Restaurant looks like a great place for lunch. The tariff is appropriate for the fare.
