“Quirky but very enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2014

Its wonderful to patronize a "mom and pop" establishment. Its not like dealing with a chain. So you have to understand office hours, owner out of the office, etc. But I have stayed here 3 times (the first time 24 years ago). Its close to Cedar Point. Reasonably priced. Very clean. Quiet. Also has Lake Erie access. I enjoy getting one of the little cabins.

I love all things retro and quaint, and this motel fits the bill. It offers tiny cottages built in the 1940s, and you can just imagine couples taking their honeymoon here. While the cottages have a great deal of character and fit into the "adorable" category well, the decor and care taken are a bit lacking. It smelled quite musty when we first got in (though that passed once we turned on the A/C unit), and my husband had to say, "Umm, you probably shouldn't sit in that chair." It didn't look clean at all! Our cottage looked like it hadn't been vacuumed (and that the people before us brought a pet, which is permitted on the premises for a tiny fee of $12). The linoleum in the bathroom was broken and dirty (and the shower didn't look all that clean, either, though the toilet had a sanitation strip on it), and we had a fussy light in the bathroom that wouldn't stay on (though you could touch it and it would cooperate?). We slept really well, despite sheets that were on the scratchy side. The lake access is teeny-tiny---just a bit of sand and some rocks---but you could throw out a fishing line there if you really wanted to. There's a pretty view of the lake from the end of the drive. Despite it being Bike Week, we had no problem with noise until the bikers started to leave at about 6am, so we appreciated the quiet.

Considering the low, LOW prices and the proximity to the lake, fishing spots, Cedar Point, and even Marblehead, I might be willing to stay here again. I just have to tell myself that it's all about the character...

Room Tip: Ask for a cottage---they have just a double bed, but I don't think I would have wanted to stay i...

For the price I didn't expect Hilton-like amenities but the staff were helpful and friendly, the rooms were decent. As a last minute decision, we rented the 2-story unit over the weekend while in town for bike week. We had planned on tent camping and this was definitely a step up from that. No bed bugs or roaches. The toilets and bath were clean. Window air conditioners...downstairs only but ceiling fans were in every room....they could have used a Swiffer duster. We slept safe, comfortably, peacefully and affordably. It is likely we will plan for bike week next year and this location could be an option worth considering. The edge of the property had AMAZING water-front views and that was a feature I would have paid considerably more for at any other location.

Room Tip: The 2-story unit was affordable and spacious compared to the other units available.

This is the 2nd time we have had a family reunion here. This time we only had 8 and only rented the 4 bedroom house for 5 nights. Still not deluxe accommodations, but very comfortable, spacious and adequate for our needs. The lake level was lower this time, so there was a lot more beach to swim and sun on. Grounds are well kept and the property is relatively quiet, making it easy to relax. Beds are comfortable and linens were clean. The housekeeping staff was very friendly and helpful. The pool was clean, but very cold. It is suppose to be heated, but wasn't. Very pet friendly, but don't let them run loose or the owner will threaten to shoot them. This was actually said to my wife (in front of witnesses) by the owner. Yes, pets are suppose to be on a leash and ours wasn't while I threw a ball for him a few times. The owner saw him, but said not a word to me at the time. He waited till later when I wasn't around. Not very good customer relations with that comment. This was the only negative encounter we had the whole stay.

Room Tip: The 1,3 and 4 bedroom houses are far off the road and closer to the beach. They're quieter also...

we stayed here on our way from Chicago out to the east coast. We wanted something that was a little more scenic and fun than a motel off the turnpike and picked this place because of the location on the lake and next to a forest preserve, hoping to take a walk or hike in the morning before we got back in the car for the day. The weather was rainy and cold, so we only took a quick walk down to the lake in the morning. The beach area we saw was only about 30 feet wide and was polluted with an old pier -- mangled metal and block. Maybe there was another access point. We stayed in one of the little hotel rooms -- it was kinda dingy and there was no coffee pot and no coffee in the main office until 8am or later. But it's a small, independently owned/operated business... they are nice and friendly and the other guests we met seemed friendly, and had been there several times before. The pool seemed nice. The owner made a comment about having some new mattresses in some of the rooms, so you might want to call and ask for recommendations for which room to select.

Room Tip: ask about new mattresses...

We went to this place over July 4th. The cabins here are so cute and they have big cabins so you can bring the whole family. It is in the country but just minutes to all the attractions. We loved the peacefulness here and the view of the Great Lakes. Highly recommend this place and we will be back.

Room Tip: Get a bigger cabin for a better view and ask for a queen bed or no smoking.
