“A nice Georgian find in Swansea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2010

My partner and I stayed at the Schouten House for a night whilst travelling the east coast of Tasmania. Schouten House is a nice old Georgian home which is very cozy and well presented . The hosts were very gracious and gave us a quick tour of the house upon our arrival, pointing out the main features. We were given a room on the first floor which had a view out to the sea. The room was a good size with a queen size bed and 2 sitting chairs and small table. The bathroom was a little small and perhaps a little outdated - but nonetheless clean and usable. There were tea/coffee facilities in the room and fresh water. There was also a communal lounge area downstairs with books and even port if you are so inclined.

Breakfast was a highlight with all the usual continental choices along with some hearty cooked dishes which can be ordered. There was plenty of free parking and it was a short walk to the town centre (no more than 5-10 mins walking or 1 min by car) so the location was good.

We felt the rate was a little high at first - however when you factor in an excellent free breakfast (which would cost $20 each anywhere else) it was reasonable enough for the summer period.

We stayed at Schouten House last weekend and really loved it.

It is a grand old house, fully refurbished with antiques and appropriate period features such as log fire, beautiful curtains and upholstery. Very cozy for a Winter weekend away.

The owners, Cameron and Jodie, were friendly and the breakfast was also beautiful in the great breakfast room.

We booked a package on wotif.com which included a bottle of wine and local cheese platter, this was beautifully set up in the sitting room with the fire roaring and we loved it.

One minor things, my mother is lactose intolerant and requested in her booking for gluten free bread for breakfast, however they didn't accommodate. This is such a simple thing to make a huge difference. It would have meant my mother could have actually eaten the breakfast that was served.

All round a wonderful b&b experience, so close to the shops and the sea. Good atmosphere and good service.

  • Liked — the cozy atmosphere
  • Disliked — The owners could have been a little more compensating

Stayed here for 2 nights in January 2008. Georgian House which would benefit from a major cleanup as there appeared to be dust from the Georgian period throughout!!!. Bedroom dusty and musty. Bedlinen was clean but bed covering and pillows smelled musty. Shower curtain very stained, admittedly there is an issue with water in the area but a new curtain or a good clean of the existing one would certainly look better. Dirty fingermarks on the bathroom door. The entire place felt dirty,. Did not eat breakfast on the first morning based on the cleanliness of the bedroom and entrance hall but did on the second morning and it appeared to be excellent, great coffee.

If you like your accommodation clean, I would not recommend a stay here in it's current condition.
