“Very well equipped quaint cottage”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

Stayed in 2-bedroom Dove cottage for two nights. Helpful, chatty owner. Cottage had just about every amenity you could want from S/C accommodation, including useful washer and drier. Very clean and well looked after generally - the owners clearly take a pride in their business. Signs all over town too, so you can't miss the site. Super bright lights in the bathroom which doubled up as heaters - nice touch.

Rustic bar and pizza place about 3 mins walk away - pizzas huge and recommended. Other options in town, though note that Swansea is small and fairly quiet, and doesn't stay up late.

Nice quiet beach a tiny walk away.

Handy also for Wineglass Bay and the like (45 min drive), and one tenth of the cost of the hotels near there!

Downsides? No view I guess as sites were quite close to one another. But overall this place comes highly recommended.

Dear Sno878,
Thank you for your comments and review of your stay in Dove Cottage at Swansea Cottages.
It is a lovely quaint traditional styles cottages with all the modern conveniences of today.
We are pleased that you found the Dove cottage, clean and well looked after with every amenity you could want. All our cottages and suites(motel style) are exceptionally well equipped in an attempt to cater for all guests comforts and needs.
It is very important to us that guests have great accommodation to relax and unwind in at the end of a long and tiring day of either travel or sight seeing.
With the property being adjacent the beach there are terrific walks and views to photograph and remember long after you have returned home.
Thank you also for your tips about the Historic Swansea Barkmill Tavern and Bakery which are terrific facilities for our guests and only 30 Metres away from our entrance.
We hope you have great memories and photograghs of your time in Tasmania and hopefully will see you visit our great state again in the future and of course back for another sty at Swansea Cottages in Dove Cottage.

We loved our stay at the cottages. Everything was catered for in our room to make it feel like home. My wife and I just got married there in Swansea as it is so beautiful. Rob and his staff bent over backwards to help. Thankyou guys, we shall see you again.

Dear Fambamfive,
Thank you for your review and great comments. These certainly help future guests to ascertain whether accommodation is suitable for their needs.
It was our great pleasure to assist to make sure all went well for your wedding in Swansea.
It was a terrific day and all went exceptionally well. We wish you both and your family the very best for the future. We were privileged to be allowed to assist.
Swansea with its history and being sited on the shores overlooking Great Oyster Bay is certainly a beautiful town and great location to spend a few days relaxing and taking in all that there is to see. It really is central to all on the East Coast and the ideal East Coast destination.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Visited for two nights 21st 22nd Jan 2013. Arrived early around 12:30 from a long trip, so very tired. We were greeted by the not so friendly owner. Saving rather rudely , that we have to come back at two o'clock, because the room wasn't ready. No offer to store our bags or give any details what his town had to offer. So first impression wasn't good.
We had a very small room ,about the size of a garage. Was supposed to be self contained. No stove,no sink and the smallest fridge I have seen. No foxtel . DVD to hire for $8. The room smelt of ants. Yes I have read that they were having an ant problem.
Thanks goodness for the tavern up the road and a short drive to Coles Bay. We had stayed in three accommodations in Tasmania for our 10days stay. The most expensive was this one and the worst stay...sorry I really don't have anything good to say about this place

Angela thankyou for your review. We value our guest’s comments as it helps us review our policies and make any necessary alterations to our delivery of service. I apologise for the initial response to your early check in, our staff have a window period of 4 hours cleaning time to ensure that rooms are cleaned to the highest standard that is why we advertise that check in is at 2 pm. I make no apology for the garage size room as you did book a double suite ( standard motel style room ) no where do we advertise that a motel room is fully self contained- we offer value for money by providing a pillow top queen size bed and mattress, electric blanket, fridge/freezer with ice cubes, microwave with microwave containers, toaster, kettle, cutlery, crockery, selection of tea, coffee, biscuits, hot chocolate, chopping board and knives, coffee plunger pot, tea pot, vegetable peeler, picnic cooler, wine glasses, beer glasses, couch, digital clock /radio, dining table and chairs, separate writing desk, air conditioning (the only accommodation complex in Swansea ), large LCD TV, DVD player, iron/ironing board, separate ensuite bathroom with hair dryer and selection of guest amenities ( soap, shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer, vanity kit), glad wrap, washing up bowl, sponge and detergent purely for your convenience. Most motel rooms provide tea making facilities only and you need to wash up your cup in the bathroom sink. Our cottages on the other hand are 2 or 3 bedroom fully self contained with stove, dishwasher and full kitchen and laundry facilities. You did however choose a double suite. I thank you for this opportunity to high light to future guest’s the detailed facilities we supply in our motel/suite rooms.
Signed

Stayed for two nights in a suite.( Sherbourne Lodge). Can't recognize description of Swansea Cottages OR Swansea itself from the review just posted. We found the accomodation exactly as described, well positioned, well run and well presented.Swansea is delightful with (at least) 2 excellent restaurants, a range of other amenities as well as friendly locals (visit the museum to sense the civic pride here)..

I stayed at one of their cottages over the Christmas break. I was curious to see the cottage since we were charged $380 a night for a family of four, which was more than room rates downtown Sydney. The cottage was OK, but nothing spectacular. In fact we only had a room in one of the cottages. To call it self-catering is miss leading because the room had no cooking facilities only a tee kettle and a refrigerator. We had a small double bed with some kind of air mattress. When one of us turned the other woke up. The kids slept in bunk beds. The room was decorated with dark colours, green tiles and patterned wall to wall carpeting. The property is right next to the local elementary school, highway and a private beach house. To get to the beach you had to walk through the school athletic field. The internet cost $20 a day. There is nothing to see in the town of Swansea so people probably stay here to visit the Freysinet National Park, which is about 40 minutes away. The local Fish and Chips charges 60 cents for small packet of ketchup. After spending $6 dollars on ketchup one meal, we went and bought our own bottle. I am always suspect of hotels that don't have a free cancellation. It is usually a bad deal and this place certainly was.

Dear Helena, (givemesunshine)
Thank you for taking the time to submit a review of our property, town and local attractions.
These assist not only our accommodation property but the many future visitors to the area.
For this reason they need to be informative, carefully composed, well researched and above all accurate and correct in information and details conveyed.
It is noted that you have made a few inaccurate statements as well as raising a few concerns that you failed to bring to the attention of staff or myself as proprietor of the business during your stay. We pride ourselves on providing well priced, well equipped clean accommodation along with friendly and accommodating service to over 6000 guests per year.
We all love our area, choose to reside here and have a passion for sharing all that the town and pristine area has to offer with all our guests.
We are sorry that you did not enjoy your visit to the Historic Seaside town of Swansea with its many magnificent kilometres of pristine natural beaches, many eateries, cafes, galleries, diverse restaurants and local attractions such as the historic Swansea Bark mill, Kate’s world famous and highly acclaimed Berry Farm, The Historic Walk, The Pier or the local Fairy penguins and Shearwaters that come ashore each evening on dusk. There is simply so much to see and do.
Regarding your accommodation it is noted that you booked a family suite (1 bedroom motel style room with queen + single bed) in September 2012 through a 3rd party website for 2 adults. You omitted to mention that 2 additional guests would also be staying.
It was only after we sent a confirmation email, confirming your reservation that you advised that the accommodation was not for 2 persons as booked but 4.
We happily worked with you to swap accommodation around during this very busy time, to another family suite with additional bedding for your requirements. Your additional guests were charged at $35 each per night. This was in addition to your original 3rd part booking rate of $290 per night (commissionable) for 2 guests. Total rate paid for 4 persons was $360, NOT $380 as you stated in your review.
We are not in a position to comment on “Downtown Sydney” prices as they vary considerably depending upon the time of year and quality of accommodation. I would assume that Sydney Hotels during Christmas without the high percentage of corporate travellers would be otherwise extremely quiet with perhaps heavily discounted room rates available.
Your accommodation in Swansea was booked during peak summer time and certainly at no more than most local and Hobart accommodation prices for a similar period. Indeed many are priced well above what you paid for 4 guests.
In your original booking 24th Sept 2012, you chose to book a 1 bedroom family suite for 2 persons, not a fully self contained cottage as you advised in your review. You could have chosen to book a fully self contained cottage however did not.
You mentioned that your suite was “nothing spectacular” however I would like to bring to your attention how well equipped it was. It was certainly well equipped; much better than most if not all motel/hotel style rooms around Tasmania.
Unlike most motel style rooms it did contain a small basic kitchenette, with microwave, jug, toaster, cutlery, crockery and microwave cooking bowls, a fridge and freezer with ice blocks for those hot summer days.
It was also air conditioned being the only accommodation air conditioned in the town for the 40 degree days that we can get on occasions and did just after your departure.
Your suite was also complete with 2 seat settee to relax in during the day or evening as well as a dining suite for 4, ensuite bathroom with shower and bath, hairdryer, large LCD Television, DVD player, IDD telephone and IPod speaker/docking station. All furnishings were finished in Tasmanian Blackwood. Also provided were tea, coffee and hot chocolate along with a variety of biscuit packs and personal toiletry portions for each guest.
Wi-Fi was available and clearly advertised at standard Telstra rates (Australian phone company rates) for data of $10 per night for $125MB of data. (There is no charge for the 3G modem that we supply “Free of Charge” for you to access this data) I am unsure as to where your claim of $20 per day for internet therefore comes from.
I am also unsure about your assertion that you had a small double bed as the bed was actually an international “large double” which in Australia is called a queen sized bed. For guest comfort these are equipped with a pillow top mattress as well as electric blankets and quality mattress protector. Only the best 5 star hotels normally have this level of comfort in their bedding which you were provided with. The latest commercial white linen with white striped bed top cover and co-ordinated bed runner and towels complimented the bedding.
Room decoration is modern cottage decor in keeping with the type of property accommodation that you selected, being cottage styled accommodation.
Access to the adjacent beach (50 Metres) as you mentioned is via the adjacent school oval (athletic field) with no roads to cross.
We were pleased to see your family enjoying this open space each day, playing Frisbee during your stay. This is certainly something that you cannot do in a Sydney Hotel.
We are sorry that you had to spend $6.00 on sauce (ketchup) satchets (60c each) at a local fish and chip outlet. Hopefully the fresh fish supplied was tasty and to your liking.
I take on board your comment regarding not having a” free cancellation” policy, however we are not a hotel, but a small family run business providing good quality accommodation in a central location and adjacent the beach, in a remote country coastal area of Tasmania.
Being not situated in a larger city, it is not practical to have a guest cancel at 6.00pm on day of arrival when we have held a booking for perhaps 3 months as in your case. Certainly at this late stage we would not be able to relet the room. Whilst holding a booking for many months, we may have turned away countless guests looking for a room, whilst holding a booking in good faith. For this reason we have a reasonable guest cancellation policy and guarantee that when you arrive your accommodation will be there for you. We do not overbook like some larger hotels who simply offer a refund when they have no room for you, and tell you to find alternate accommodation.
Your comment that our type of cancellation policy “is usually a bad deal and this place certainly was” is unreasonable and insulting to not only myself but all staff who tried to accommodate you and your family and special needs, you during your stay.
Indeed as a seasoned traveller much more could have been expected from you.
It is noted that you did not raise any issues with us during or after your stay which denied us the opportunity to address any concerns you may have had. , You departed, anonymously and erroneously made disparaging comments about the room, property, eating establishments, town and general area.
We are sorry that your visit to this great area was an obvious disappointment, however perhaps instead of blaming the local businesses and the town and area in general you may need to accept responsibility for the fact that you booked a destination that was unfortunately not what you expected or to your liking.
The vast majority of tourists to the property and region thoroughly enjoy and love the area as past reviews attest.
We are sorry that we were unable to please you.
It is disappointing that, as an experienced and well travelled person, you not only denied us the opportunity to discuss and address concerns that you may have had, regarding your stay but instead chose to post inaccurate and misleading statements as well as denigrating the property and business for no apparent justifiable reason, whilst personally hiding behind a pen name.
Certainly not the course of action of a responsible, experienced and well travelled person.
We host over 6000 guests per year and unfortunately can only please around 99.94%.
A top contributor you may be but perhaps one of dubious credibility after this review.
We wish you the best in your ongoing travels ahead.
Regards,
Rob Golley

Swansea is a beautiful small costal town. It has been my favorite place to stay in TAS so far. It is close to Freycinet National Park. It has a nice scenic beach around the outside of the town. If you are looking for a relaxing place to spend your time this town is the place. It has several all restaurants. The Swansea cottages match the town. You feel at home in them. It is a very quiet place just a short walk to the beach. You really don't need to use your car to get around town. Everything is within walking distance. I definitely recommend staying there.

My partner and I stayed here a few nights ago and it was perfect. The location is perfect for walking into town for dinner (although it's a dark walk!) and everything was clean and beautiful. We stayed in the spa suite and cannot wait to go back!
