“Great Value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

We had a lovely stay here, the decor is old, but with charm and character. The bathroom in our room was brand new and lovely. The room was very clean. Breakkie, simple and yum and spoilt with a lovely view. Great price. Thanks Brian!

The carpets, wallpaper, doors (and some door knobs) in the lodge are from a bygone era, but so is the good, old-fashioned hospitality shown by Brian. Some would say it is old, others would say it has character and charm. Given it is immaculately clean...we opted for the latter. The common dining and lounge area has a sunny aspect and the electric blanket and bar heater in our room ensured we were cosy warm at night. It's a few kilometers out of town, but most people visiting Strahan have their own vehicle so we didn't see that as a drawback. At $80 per room per night during peak tourist season with two bathrooms to share amongst just five rooms...this is a terrific option if you would prefer spending your money on other things (like the crayfish we had for dinner) rather than accommodation.

Good value for price, very clean, old furniture and lots of privacy. Good views. 5 minutes from the centre of Strahan. Every thing you need is provided. We stayed in 3a and it was obviously the largest of the cabins. Cabins set out apart so total privacy obtained

Stayed two nights in the main house, which is around 100 years old. Sure the furniture and decor was dated, but to be honest it reminded me of staying at my cousins farm. The place was clean, tidy and warm. The room was big and the bed comfortable. I think all in all, especially considering the price, that it was good value and we were certainly happy with it.

Brian was a pleasant host, would see him at breakfast where we would have a quick chat then the would go his way and us ours. He was happy to answer any questions we had, and even explained how they shifted the house from Queenstown to Strahan via road (if you have driven this road then you will realize this is quite an achievement).

It is a little way out of Strahan, so a car or transport would be good, but if you were happy with a bit of a walk I would guess its about 3 to 4kms walk from the information centre in Strahan.

Pleasant views from the grounds over a small harbor, and the small table outside is a nice place to sit with a glass of something and enjoy the views as the sun goes down. Take some insect repellant though.

What can one say, well, for us this was a wonderful experience. We stayed in Cabin 3A, see photos. For those who like nostalgia, this was like stepping back into the 70's WOW!!! it was great. Absolutely loved it. Everything that could possibly be needed was there right down to the candle on the dining table. The views from this cabin, were incredibly beautiful especially in the early morning and at sunset. Even the electric "fireplace" created a cosy atmosphere. Electric blanket and hair dryer were added extras that made the stay comfortable. The cabin was surrounded by grassland and scrub, with an easy walk from the car park to the cabin. Highly recommend this accommodation to anyone who would like an affordable stay in Strahan. Also, key was kindly left for us outside the office, as we were running late.

If you love isolation, wild and windswept views and privacy, you will will love the Wilderness Lodge. The cabins are very old but comfortable and adequate. The service from the management was genuine and caring when they rang us to sort out some issues with our booking. They offered us a refund, to make a booking for us elsewhere but instead we decided to accept alternative accomodation and stayed in the cabins and I am glad we did.

I booked for one night in a single, ensuite room in the main house. Upon arrival I collected my key as arranged from outside reception. Parked my car and was getting out my car when who I presume was one of the owners telling me "actually the parking is on the other side".
No welcome, hello, introduction- nothing. How bloody rude if you ask me.
I'm aware it's a budget option- travelling solo I don't want to spend a fortune on single night accommodation, and am not after the romantic experience- but really, does a warm spirit cost anything? It took some prompting to enquire about dinner options- and even then was only given a brochure- no conversation/suggestions offered.
Plus side I had the place to myself- best thing about an otherwise less than ordinary experience. Heating worked- that was a bonus. I won't be sticking around for a dodgy breakfast in the morning!
