“Great for kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

We stayed one night on our way down the east coast. Adjoining rooms on the ground floor were great for us as the kids could run straight out to the playground which they loved. What kid doesnt like a huge pirate ship! A nice view of the beach, would be amazing from the higher floors. Dated but for the price it was clean and comfortable.

I was a bit wary booking here after reading some of the other reviews, but we chose it because practically nothing else was available on the east coast. We booked a refurbished room, and were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived.

THE GOOD STUFF
The room was obviously recently redone, so very clean and fresh. The colours and decorations fit with the seaside location. The room and bathroom are small, but fine for 2 people. The views of the river and ocean were gorgeous, and it was very quiet despite being quite busy. The staff are very friendly. The local beach is just across the road, and it's a stunning spot.

THE OTHER STUFF
The common areas of the hotel are clean and tidy, but definitely look dated. The booking advertised a "free continental breakfast", which was just cereal or toast with tea or instant coffee. (Other breakfast food, such as hot meals, was available to order.)

I didn't think this hotel was great value compared to places we stayed in Hobart and Launceston for the same price, but given that it was peak season on the coast, it was a convenient and comfortable place to stay.

Room Tip: The rooms in the "River View Wing" cost more but are very clean and have wonderful views.

We booked this accommodation via internet two days ahead of our arrival (its winter - not the resort's busy time of year). On arrival we were told they weren't expecting anyone and proceeded to tell us how they were going to complain to the booking agent. We provided the booking sheet to the desk clerk which she proceeded to read out to us (a refurbished queen room) and then told us that we'd probably like a ground floor room as otherwise we'd have to walk up 2 flights of stairs with our luggage. The room she booked for us (room 37) she assured us would be quiet as there was noone else in the rooms around us. We walked down the corridor to our room - right next to the elevator that was clearly working as we listened to it being used for a good deal of the night - not sure why we would have had to climb 2 flights of stairs... The room itself was tidy but of a 3-star standard at best, and the ensuite was awful - tiny and dirty. It was extremely cold, being winter and close to the beach, and the heater took at least 8 hours to improve the temperature in the room. In the evening we walked down to the front bar attached to the resort to buy dinner but when we entered the bar, the desk clerk was working behind the bar talking to a local patron - she looked at us and turned away: a clear indication of the level of service we would be subjected to, so we turned around and walked straight back out again. We then walked to the resort's restaurant but decided we really didn't wish to spend any more money than we'd already wasted at this establishment. In the end we decided to drive the approx 30kms to St Helens to buy dinner - at least there we were welcomed and received a decent meal. Back to the resort for the night: the room was still cold; the bed was hard; the pillows flat; and we listened to people talking and the elevator travelling up and down for a good part of the night. We were very glad that we'd only booked the 1 night as we certainly wouldn't have stayed for a second. Its this kind of experience that turns tourists away from one of the most beautiful areas of TAS. WAKE UP Scamander Beach Resort - you need to lift your standards, or more accurately describe your accommodation and drop your prices to match!

Very tired in rooms that have not been upgraded. Needs a complete re-vamp. The restaurant was cold, not enough heating. Food was disappointing for how expensive it was. Could be a fantastic spot if some money was spent upgrading the entire premises.

We booked a few days during Autumn for a family trip, with a cheap coupon deal (sometimes you get what you pay for). The room was very tired, dark. The staff were friendly, and trying their best. I wish that we had booked into St Helens (we ended up travelling there everyday for lunch/dinner anyway) - we saw a BIG4 that looked much better (for a family). The playground was very tired, but the kids liked it. Lovely beach across the road. The hotel really needs a refit. Lots of little bugs came into our room (it rained, and we were on the ground floor).

We had modest expectations to begin with but were disappointed from the get go. Upon checking in we were charged $100 more than we were quoted at the time of booking (even though we'd called a second time to confirm the cost). Receptionist blamed the other receptionist, and then us, for the misunderstanding, made some quite unprofessional personal remarks and no attempt to conciliate. Would have gone elsewhere but had already paid deposit... Things got worse. Our rooms were damp and smelly, with mouldy, mosquito ridden bathrooms, torn fly wire, sliding doors that wouldn't open, fridge that wasn't cold, plenty of dead bugs (different sorts!) and an unusually hazardous playground littered with cig butts. Such a great location but really quite easily the worst place I've ever paid to stay at.

Resort is tired but clean and staff were all nice. We stayed in Room 27 on a Living Social voucher (like a previous reviewer) and it had been refurbished recently although room and bathroom were on the small side. Room were quiet and every room overlooks water. A great base for checking out the East Coast of Tasmania and certainly better value than Tidal Waters Resort at St Helens. Voucher included a free bottle of wine and AUD25 off dinner in resort's restaurant Five Spice. Meal was good although more like pub food than restaurant food. Portion sizes were largish. Continental Breakfast was included in tariff and was adequate - although a sugar substitute and half way decent coffee would have been appreciated.
I would recommend the Resort to other travellers due to its realistic pricing and extras offered with that price.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room as I believe there are some rooms that have not yet been overhauled.
