“Accomodation great, staff less so”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

I stayed at Stewarts Bay Lodge with my daughter as part of a tour of Australia. We had two nights here and was seriously impressed by the standard of the lodges (although we did have a refurbished two-bedroom spa lodge. The older ones looked a bit ropey). The lodge was clean, well furnished and quiet, so no complaints here. I wasn't so impressed with the staff. The woman on reception was one of those no-eye-contact types who gave the impression that our arrival interrupted her work. She was hardly falling over herself to welcome us. Similarly, the restaurant manager wasn't gong to go out of his way to put up a nice welcome either. We asked for a table at 6.30 and was told it will have to be six. Ok, fine. But we were there for two hours and the restaurant was never more than a third full. Mind you, the food was great. The next day we were told the restaurant was full until 9pm (too late) but when we popped down to use the wifi in reception at 7pm, we could see only a handful of tables in use. Make a bit more of an effort next time eh? Some of us have come a long way to stay with you.

Room Tip: Ask for a lodge overlooking the lake but I get the impression they reseve these for 'regulars...

We could not believe this place when we pulled up- the pictures online do not do it justice! It is right on the water with a beautiful bay views from the restraunt, reception and from some of the cabins. We stayed in a water view cabin for 2 nights and it was pure luxury; a spa with a view and massive king bed. The restraunt food was incredible and the staff were extremely helpful- they even organised a kayak for a day on the water for us. We will definately be back!!

Stewarts Bay Lodge was an excellent find. We stayed in the two bedroom waterfront cabin with beautiful views over Stewart Bay, Ladies Bay and across to the islands off the Port Arthur Penitentiary. The cabin was well appointed and furnished with airconditioning, dishwasher, washer and dryer. Kitchen was large and well equiped as was the living room. Main bedroom had a large king size bed looking out over the view as did the spa bath in the ensuite. Also extra pillows! Second bedroom also had some views. The cabins are situated in a nice bushland setting which lends itself to great bird watching and the resident pottaroos who visit at dusk for a forage.
The reception area and main lodge was very inviting with a bar, seating around a log fire for the cooler months, dining area and outdoor area for the warmer months.
As we intended to spend a few days at Port Arthur Penitentiary we chose Stewarts Bay Lodge for it's oh so close proximity to it - barely a stone's throw away. Great for those who wish to come back to their cabin during the day for a cuppa, spot of lunch or a rest. Also great for those (like us) who want to do the ghost tour at night. In all I recommend staying here - especially if your looking to visit Port Arthur. Word to the wise for those on a budget. As the cabins are fully self contained there is not many places to buy groceries along the way. There is a couple of IGA stores about 10 minutes down the road at Nubeena but if your looking for a larger stock of groceries I suggest purchasing them at Sorrell or Hobart if your coming from that direction.

Room Tip: Waterfront cabins 24,25 and 26 have great views overlooking the bays.

We spent the first night of our honeymoon at Stewarts Bay Lodge. We unfortunalety had such a short time in Port Arthur that we didn't get to spend much time at the lodge. We were given a waterfront 1 brm and it had beautiful views of the Bay. The buffet breakfast at $15pp was really yummy and good value. The bed was comfy and the room had everything you could need for a longer stay for self catering. The lodge has a beautiful natural setting and it was a shame we only had one night there.

Great place-restaurant is fabulous, we visited for a wedding. Staff were attentive and obliging, food was great, rooms beautifully impressive. Highly recommend coming here if heading to Port Arthur as it is close to everything you need but secluded enough that you have your own space

We stumbled onto Stewarts Bay Lodge simply by asking for directions whilst eating at Barrilla Bay Oysters near the Hobart airport. The lady there recommeded the place but couldn't rembember the name but recounted the way to find it - she was right.
Unfortunately Optus signal is terrible in that part of the world (that's what we had) and found it simply by hunting about- Not hard to find if you know the name of course!
On our arrival we found the place almost full even though it has 41 cabins of differing quality and age.
We were offered only 2 options and took the cheaper which was an older but updated cabin which looked fine.
And it was fine in all respects except the property being almost totally full and on a 'long weekend' was totally stretched with their staff.
Apparently there had been a wedding party family in the cabin the night before and although the cleaners had done there best, it still showed a few signs of the last inhabitants- not so great.
We discussed this problem the next day with the manager, who immediately looked agast, wanted to remedy the issues.
We took the option of moving to one of the updated cabins close to the main building and restaurant.
The new cabin was great
There was a spa in the bathroom and a lovely view of the bay and bush.
I thought the design and locations of the new cabins was excellent and a touch of luxury to go.
The trees around us were in bloom and were often filled with birds( including lorrakeets I think) and we saw wallabies and other creatures scurrying around at dusk in the bush.
We enjoyed our last night there immensely

Room Tip: If you don't mind paying the extra freight for the newer cabins - do it. see if the ones from 22...

Stewart's Bay Lodge was a fantastic place for a getaway. We went there for a wedding, which was held on the beach below the lodge, followed by the reception in the restaurant at the lodge. The accommodation was fantastic. We had a two bedroom delux spa suite. It was clean, comfortable was well appointed and had a great view. The staff were exceptional and all requests were met without fault. If I had to find any fault it would only be that at night the paths etc are not well lit which resulted in my elderly mother sustaining a bad fall and injury to her legs. I think that a sensor light at the entry to each room would be a great safety initiative or path lights.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the main building are easier to access, especially at night. A quite steep pathway t...
