“Unforgettable Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

Girlfriend and I stayed in the streamside cabin for two nights - it was ridiculously rad.

We searched every hotel/motel/camping option "near" Hobart via wotif and stumbled across Huon Bush Retreats. The outdoor bathtub was the drawcard and it did not disappoint. We read all the reviews on tripadvisor in regards to what cabin would be best suited for us. There were a few comments about the stream side being the most secluded and it definitely was. Reality felt a long long way away at this cabin.

The carbon neutral aspect of the cabin is awesome and made the bush experience much more authentic - the drop toilet was no different to a normal toilet (no smells, no hassles), our phones were off/flat the entire time we were at the cabin, we bought a few cd's for the cd player and had drinks on the deck/in front of the fire place. Unreal experience being off the grid that we will definitely do again this year - but for much longer!

The service was magic. We had a huge delicious platter delivered by the staff on the second night, the fire was rocking by the time we checked in at 830/900 pm the first night, the cabin was clean and had epic attention to detail. The bed was super comfy too!

The walks out the back of the retreats are a must as well.

I'll be recommending it to everyone I know, and we will definitely be back this year - hopefully for the winter experience!

Room Tip: Stream side is the most secluded/private.

Hi James B,

Thanks for your comprehensive review. It will help prospective guests decide if Huon Bush Retreats is the right experience for them.

It takes a lot of extra effort to run an accommodation property in an environmentally responsible way. We go much further than changing light blubs and washing towels only each second day. We are glad that you appreciated the compost toilets, chemical free water supply, protected forest and wildlife etc.

Also glad you enjoyed your dinner platter. (A note to people reading your praise for our Gourmet Platter and considering trying the same. As we get the ingredients in fresh, meal service does need to be pre booked and the exact ingredients are subject to slight availability variations.)

Watch out for out $10 second night special that we run over winter. Great for a weekend escape from Melbourne. See the Specials page on our website.

From the moment we enquired all the way through to our departure it was as good as it could be, far exceeded expectations. The guys run it well and have chosen a fabulous location and ensured that their footprint on the environment is minimal.

We upgraded from a Tee Pee to a cabin as we were a family of four and it was a good move. That said the Tee Pees were really cool and would be perfect for a couple. They also have great really private campsites. The Kitchen area is one of the best I have seen at a camp site and is always clean. They also have games and puzzles and we managed to build a 1000 piece puzzle in the 3 nights we were there... very relaxing. Lots of wallabies at Sunset.

Lots to do in the area, recommend the Tahune Air Walk (45 minute drive) but there are also some really good walks from the property. Down the hill on the way to Huonville is a bakery I would recommend for good coffee and their Wallaby Pies are a must, if you are not vegetarian :)

G'day DazzLoyd,

Glad you enjoyed your family stay in one of our cabins. As you identify, the tipees are great for a couple or maybe single parent and child but the cabins are better for a whole family. Glad we were able to upgrade you to a cabin and that you appreciated the eco facilities.

Cheers

No better place to relax and take time out from the world. We stayed in the Big Tree Cabin, couldn't believe my partner had found such a perfect place for our stay of 10 nights! An eco friendly stay in cosy comfort, especially the wood fire. Stunning walks, views and visiting wildlife. I loved the fact that we were close enough to all in the Huon Valley, but able to escape each evening to our paradise in the woods!

Hi Marilyn,

Looks like Big Tree Cabin provided you with the perfect balance of convenience and amenity. As you point out, our location is central to Hobart and the Huon Valley and Bruny Island. Nearby everything but once you settle into your cabin, you feel a million miles from anywhere.

Thanks for the perfect score on all aspects

We happened upon Huon Bush Retreats, thinking of staying just overnight on our van on the way to Tahune. We loved it so much we stayed another night and didn't bother with Tahune. Spot for our van was very private and we could view wildlife right outside out window. There are a number of well constructed trails over Mt Misery so you can get to see quite a lot of the views, and there is a path to the summit so which my husband enjoyed. He also enjoyed an up close and personal echidna experience on the summit! Toilets absolutely spotless at all times. Drop toilets but not a whiff of smell. Showers hot. Outside bath is private but gives a lovely view across the bush. Really enjoyed a lovely hot soak, despite the rain. Road In is very steep and quite long but Paul gave very specific instructions about that so we weren't bothered. Definitely a very very peaceful bush experience and one that we'd be happy to repeat.

We stayed in the cliff top cabin. Three friends way for the weekend from Hobart. I have stayed twice before and loved the peace, genuine hosts and the beauty of the place. We had a wonderful time. In one packed day and night we bush walked, danced, sang, read books and had three baths in the great bath outdoors.the wood fire that was all stoked up for us on arrival was never out and kept everything warm in all rooms. The beds were great , comfortable and we were really taken with the beautiful native timbers head boards and side shelves. The views were impressive and the whole cabin very private. We all thought the cabin was excellent value for money. We travelled to cygnet the next day and also went to the summer kitchen bakery in range laugh. Beautiful places are close by to explore. As we checked out our host Michael was kind enough to share a wildlife experience with us and we got to see al joey up close. He clearly has a passion for the animals and the unique environment. I appreciate the natural way things are done at the Huon Bush Retreats ,no hype just lovely people , genuine care and beautiful surroundings. Thank you.we will be back soon. Lisa ker.

Room Tip: All accommodation is great. Just work out which one you want depending on number in the group and se...

Hi Lisak,

Looks like you chose the perfect location for your short break. The large size of Clifftop Cabin living room and deck makes it a great location for a family or group of friends.

You say, "... I appreciate the natural way things are done at the Huon Bush Retreats ,no hype just lovely people , genuine care and beautiful surroundings..". Thanks for that, it is heartening to know that most of the time, our guests enjoy the special experience that we have created. Huon Bush Retreats is not for everyone. Glad that you like it enough to have visited three times.

Hoping to see you again soon.

Paul and Michael

We stayed one night in the Tepee (incorrectly spelled Tipee on their site) and the accommodation was what we expected. The toilet/showed facilities were close which was good. The Tepee is expensive for the fact it is a simple room with nothing but a fold out bed and camp fire, but we were happy to pay extra for an eco experience. The bed was not really comfortable as other people have mentioned, there is a bar about halfway down which makes it quite uncomfortable. However, we were still fine with the accommodation until it came to breakfast...
We had pre-ordered the breakfast hamper (stated to contain the following from the website: Brookfarm muesli, organic yoghurt*, Lucaston Apple Juice and organic orange juice*, Summer Kitchen organic bread*, Huon Bush Retreats jam and preserved fruit). We were expecting to be able to sit on the deck and eat. But discovered our Jam and preserved fruit had been replaced with eggs and a very sad looking apple and orange... So we decided to make the best of it and head to the camp kitchen, even though we really did not want to cook. This is where horror set it. There is no way that the kitchen in the state we saw it would pass health and safety checks. All the pots and pans and plates and bowls were stored in plastic tubs that were about 20cm off the ground. Ever single one had very large holes in them, allowing easy access for rats/mice/wallabies and other animals/bugs to climb all over them!! I was horrified and washed EVERYTHING before we used it. The stove is a rusty old gas kitchen stove. We then discovered there was no break knife to cut our unsliced loaf of bread and so had to TEAR the bread up in order to eat it!! There was no salt to have on our eggs... The serving of musli was about 1/3 of a cup each... $30 for THE WORST BREAKFAST we had ever had! It wasn't just the off tasting juice that left a bitter taste in my mouth... ABSOLUTE RIP OFF FOR BREAKFAST. We would have been much better driving 5mins down the road for a full hot breakfast, that we did not have to prepare or wash up after!! Upon mentioning the missing utensils from the kitchen, he said he would replace them in the future: not even an apology!
As another reviewer has mentioned, the drive way is poor. As someone who has driven on a lot of dirt roads etc, they need to resurface it, it is currently full of ruts. I would never stay here and I would never recommend anyone I know to stay here either.

I have noticed the owners like to add quite passive aggressive responses to the negative feedback on this site and I look forward to reading the response to my review...

Room Tip: The breakfast basket is a rip off. Do not self cater in the camp kitchen, it is disgusting

My wife and I spent two nights of our honeymoon together here. This was a wonderful place to stay. It is quite remote and the stream side cabin is very private.
The cabin was very clean and confortable. Plenty of wood for the fire. No TV. Outside bath. CD player and a few CD's provided. The cabin is run on solar 12 volt power and this was not a problem and the battery backup did not run out at all.
Paul (one of the owners) ran us through the requirements for the stay etc and from then on we did not see another person/car while on site.
A pair of black currongs welcomed us on arrival and called us for a chat and a snack each morning and afternoon. Lots of visiting wildlife around dusk and into the evening.
The large bath did take quite some time to fill with the small water heater/tank needing to re-heat a couple of times, but once completed this was very relaxing.
The road UP to the administration building is a reasonable challange, but there are notes at the gate to explain how best to tackle the steep gravel/concrete road sections. Note if using a front wheel drive hire car turn off the traction control as when we got to the gravel hill the car just came to a halt as it could not get traction, once the traction control was off the wheels had more than enough grip to get up the hill. Also the Stream Side cabin is lower than the very steep section so it was only negotiated once.
All up this was a wonderful part of our honeymoon and very relaxing (and private) place to take some time out and/or visit the lower area of TAS east coast.

Room Tip: Very private in the Stream Side cabin.
