“Good food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We had dinner there & both enjoyed. I had the Salmon with Veg & partner the Fish chips & salad both enjoyed very much. Prices are reasonable, in a clean comfy setting with the Huon river & surrounding hills a wonderful view from the dining room. The table next to us had several kids who were entertained with a blackboard the length of one wall. Would definitely recommend.

“More than a restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

The Lady Frankllin Hotel, scenically set across the Huon Highway from the tranquil Huon River in south-eastern Tasmania, is not that great to look at. Nor is the restaurant. But the food . . mouthwatering!
Especially the seafood.
“It’s as local as we can possible make it,” says hotel and restaurant owner Dianne Thorley. (Di, by the way, is the colourful former Mayor of Toowoomba, Queensland, and quite a character. A conversation with her is worth the visit to Franklin alone!)
But back the restaurant and the seafood. The oysters were the best I’ve ever tasted, and that includes Sydney rock oysters and those huge New Zealand ones. In fact the Tassie oysters seemed to include the best feature of each of these – the taste of the Sydney rock oyster, and the size of the kiwi product. Then there’s the Tasmanian salmon – the “best in the world”, they say. Pan-seared perfectly, presented magnificently. Gorgeous Tasmanian scallops enhance the seafood platter. And the fish (we had ours deep fried) is snow-white flesh encased in a special batter Di prepares herself.
It’s more than “pub grub”. It’s a total Tassie taste experience.
The Lady Franklin is well worth a visit for lunch or dinner, just a half-hour’s drive south of Hobart on the Huon highway. Sit on the enclosed deck and watch the majestic Huon River flow past as you enjoy a magnificent seafood platter. And, if you’re lucky, hear from Di Thorley about what’s wrong – and right – with the world!
