“Average pub meal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

Average pub meal, large serving size with typical chips/salad or veggies side. Squid entree was nice. For mains we all ordered steak, one came out raw and one overdone. Service was ok, order at the counter. Meals were overall quick to come out. Pub closes early so make sure you go early evening. Pool table and dart board in pub area. Pub also operates as bottle shop over the counter with limited range.

One of the things about Flinders Island is that your options are limited.

We visited on a Monday so the place was quiet. The Interstate is your typical country pub; long history with a more recent make over. Staff were helpful and the food exactly what you would expect.

Our one disappointment was the wine list. Basic is the word that comes to mind. We were very disappoint that they didn't stock any of the locally produced wines.

We rocked up at this pub for a meal on Friday about 7pm and couldn't believe it - this place was pumping! We didn't book a table, turns out that was a mistake, as they were fully booked. No matter, the very friendly waitress suggested we wait in the bar and soon enough there was a table ready for us. The meal choices for a small country town were incredible. I had an exquisite warm chicken salad which was huge and absolutely delicious. LOVE Flinder's Island, it's relaxed lifestyle and very friendly locals who all seem to love a chat! It's like stepping back in time (in a good way!).

Room Tip: Book for meals, or be prepared to wait for a table

There are only two pubs on Flinders Island; the Furneaux Tavern in Lady Barron and the Interstate in Whitemark, the largest town on the island. You probably won't want to stay at the Interstate for your entire stay on the island if you are traveling for leisure as cabins, houses and holiday flats provide the best value self-contained accommodation. You probably will want to visit at some stage for a meal or at least a drink. There is no need to stay here on your first night if you are coming from Melbourne as there is time after your flight arrives to meet your hire car Rep. at the airport and drive to your accommodation before nightfall. You should never drive at night on Flinders Island unless it is absolutely essential, and then you should not exceed 40km. Night time is critter time. If you are coming from Launceston on the late flight, the Interstate might be a good choice for your first night.

Coming from Melbourne, we spent our last night at the Interstate which gave us the chance to check out the local scene in the public bar, have a good meal in the restaurant, have a good nights sleep and a big, relaxed breakfast in the dining room before heading down to the airport.

The Interstate is a classic, historic hotel. The public bar looks like a public bar. The entry and restaurant area underwent a big renovation about 15 years ago with lots of lead-light and it is holding up well. The rooms upstairs have high ceilings and labyrinthine corridors. We stayed in a standard room with television, a basin and shared facilities down the hall with a cooked breakfast for $80, which was good value. It had been renovated and was clean with a comfortable bed. There are 5 standard rooms, 8 ensuite rooms and a 5 bedroom ground floor apartment with two bathrooms and kitchenette/ lounge.

As with anywhere at any time on Flinders Island you should always book ahead and the magic website for the whole island is www.visitflindersisland.com.au
