“Great place near a solemn historical site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2012

Truly a magnificent view over the Tasman Sea. We had an apartment suite, outside patio, full kitchen and washing/ dryer machine. The latter was a little tricky but we finally figured it out. Dinner in the restaurant with a magnificent view was quite reasonable 40$ seafood platter for 2. The venue is very close to the infamous guard dog line at Eaglehawk Neck a narrow isthmus which was the final obstacle in the escapees route from Port Arthur penal colony. Port Arthur is a must see for anyone.

We stayed here overnight while visiting family, and will come back each time we need to visit them again. Such friendly staff and the position is unbeatable for views. You need to remember though that Eaglehawk Neck is a small town with down to earth, no-frills people - the hotel is not fancy five star but nor should it have to be, that's not what the town is about. We stayed in the newer part of the hotel, and the studio room with kitchenette was everything we needed - clean, modern, comfortable and spacious. We had a few afternoon drinks in the bar and chatted with locals, then had dinner in the hotel restaurant with our family. Again, it's not five star, but in terms of service it was one of the best places we have stayed around the world. And the pub menu food left everyone happy. If you are visiting this part of Tasmania for any reason, I'd highly recommend a stay at Lufra.

Just returned from our first stay at the Lufra Hotel. Lovely position on the bay, excellent for whale watching. We stayed upstairs in the hotel. the bedroom had a nice view of the bay and the beach. The hotel is in fairly good condition considering it's age and the staff are friendly and helpful. The food was good and plenty of it. Lots of sights to visit and would recommend it to anyone. Looking forward to our next visit....

Thank you. It is pleasing to see a review from someone who appreciates the finer attributes of this art deco style hotel, built by Reg Ansett in 1948. The present owners have plans to upgrade some areas during the next "off season" whilst retaining the iconic nature of the building.

The hotel is set on a narrow isthmus with the most wonderful sea views. Really well sited for exporing the historic area around Port Arthur. On this alone, I'd say that it's worth staying here.
The rooms are not huge, but they served their purpose. Comfortable, at a reasonable price.
I really liked John, who seemed to run the place, and was very knowledgeable about the convict history of the area.
The dining experience was interesting, and memorable. On the up side, the portions were huge, the food well cooked, and there was a good selection of wine and food. The restaurant staff were a little odd (clearing our plates as each of us finished, rather than waiting for the whole table to finish, and switching some of the dining room lights out before we'd finished our meal! One of the staff was trying very hard to sell us a personal tour of the area, at hugely inflated prices!).

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view

Comments are greatly appreciated. Have instucted restaurant staff to be more sensative to guests expectations - especially in soliciting outside business.

We stayed on a 3 night deal in the new apartments. For us they were great value for money for a family of 4. Great views & facilities. Our friends stayed in Room 11 in the older part. This was 2 bedrooms, a lounge & huge bathroom with spa & for the $120 per night for a family of five this also offered great value & views plus it had a really cosy feel. The older part of the hotel is something to be appreciated with many original features & architecture. It would be no mean feat renovating this old beauty without destroying its originality. We had dinner in the restaurant, lucky enough to be a Wednesday with an $18 3 course meal. The food was excellent & also good value for money. Wi-fi worked good in the apartment (after a little persistence). Overall for what we paid we could not have asked for more. I must admit that we had our reservations due to the negative reviews. We also run an accommodation business & I agree with John that it would be nice if people took the time to write more positive reviews or addressed any issues at the time with the owners rather than waiting to bag them out in a public forum. Sometimes the customer is NOT always right!!

Thank you. It is nice to read comments regarding room 11 as this is the same room deemed unsuitable by a previopus guest. It is all a matter of perception and expectations.

I have now stayed here on a number of occasions, and the last was the best. The managers and staff are very friendly and make you feel welcome. and the restaurant serves very nice meals. The Best Western apartments are very good value, with wonderful views to the south, and suitable for families.

The rooms in the hotel building are being progressively renovated - this time I stayed in 25, one of the renovated ones and although quite small, was very comfortable and very good value

Good to see a positive review. Most guests who enjoy their stay and/or who are pleased with the property do not consider it necessary to write a review. I seems that only the dissatisfied guests are keen to tell all of their experience.
