“SUCH A PEACFUL AND RELAXING LOCATION”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

This is a must if you are in the area, Mark and his family are a fantastic help, very knoledgable regarding the area and the house is just fantastic. The room was splendid, view of the ocean, sunrise and listening to the water was so relaxing. Big television, antique furniture and mark cooks a fantastic breakfast. I highly recommend this to anyone

Room Tip: do not hesitate in calling Mark as they have accomodation to cater for all needs.

My husband and I were given a night in the "Blue Room" as a wedding gift from friends who used to live at Port Sorrell. We decided to stay two nights, and pay the extra night. We were unable to book the 2nd night in the Blue Room, so first stayed in another room. Both rooms were dirty, there's no excuse for this. Call your self a family hotel, or quirky, or 130 years old - no problem with that - but this in my book does not justify the lack of cleanliness. Worse still, our night in the blue room (supposedly the flagship room) was spoilt by the very fresh smell of a previous guest's vomit on the carpet, and on the side of the bed. Perhaps they had a big night the previous evening, who knows, but I will never forget the smell of it whilst I was trying to sleep, and being 8 months pregnant at the time, you can imagine how much fun trying to sleep with the stentch was (not). I'm not a fussy nit-picker, that goes looking for issues. I am a reasonable person who expects reasonable (or even above reasonable) levels of cleanliness, especially when parting with a reasonable amount of $$. Hawley House, read your reviews - there are many issues with poor standards of cleanliness. There's no point blaming guests for being fussy or nit-pickers - just lift your game, your cleaning staff, management quality control of rooms after cleaning, and we will all be happier for it. I would rather wish my memories of Hawley House were not the smell emanating from the carpet, but rather the lovely (clean) room with beautiful views, in a spectacular part of Tasmania.

Having reviewed our reservations system, we did not have anyone matching the description of these guests staying for two nights May 2011, so this is truly mysterious feedback which is difficult to respond to, 12 months after the fact. It is also interesting to note that from their other review that their stay at Hawley was followed by a family holiday in Cambodia the following month, therefore with a newborn baby in tow?! Not likely . . .

The claims of the room reeking of vomit is equally strange - Hawley is a secluded and quiet escape, and we do not have raucous drunken parties resulting in vomit over furniture and carpet - surely if this had been the case the reviewer would have asked for a change of room?! It just does not make sense.

The Blue room is not advertised anywhere as our flagship room, however it does feature two french balconies and a King size bed, as well as stunning views, and does happen to be requested specifically more than any other room by returning visitors.

Our accommodation is located within a 130 year old family home - this is by no means intended as any sort of excuse but is simply an accurate description of the experience our guests should anticipate. The house and guest rooms are cleaned thoroughly on a daily basis.

My partner and I found Hawley House to be a lovely experience. After a full day of driving we were delighted to hear that Hawley House had a vacancy and ended up extending our stay. the setting was perfect - near by bush walk, view over winery and water, walk to beach, beautiful gardens, lovely old home...

Upon viewing the website the views offered and the location seemed impressive. Save to say the real thing did not live up to expectations. The numerous problems included the following:

1. The shower door did not operate properly;
2. The room was unclean and poorly maintained, eg. the room has not been painted in some considerable time and the balcony funriture was rusted;
3. The previous occupants of the room had smoked in the room as advised by the operators and as was clear from the odour of the room;
4. The bedding was worn and torn;
5. The floor of the bathroom and bedroom had a considerable;
6. The television did not work;
7. Large dogs were present in the mian house where our room was located;

There were other issues but the above is an indication of some of the more significant issues.

I have travelled extensively both within Australia and internationally and can with some confidence indicate that the self rating of this accommodation as 4 stars is by no means accurate or sustainable. In fact it represents what I would consider a misleading and deceptive description of the property. The age of the property in my view in no way excuses the poor quality of the accommodation. If accommodation is to be offered then it should be of suffficient quality. I have recently stayed in a residence in the Napa Valley of California much older than Hawley House which was welll renovated and maintained and infinitely superior in quality to that of Hawley House.

Room Tip: Do not go to Hawley House. Try Peppers York Cove in the Tamar Valley.

Dear Nigel,
We describe our property as being a '130 year old, idiosyncratic, animal friendly, family home set on 400 acres' which I think is a perfectly accurate description of what visitors should expect. I am not sure how you got the impression that you would receive a cookie-cutter spec-built resort style room from that description, or the photos we use (including pictures of our very friendly dogs featured on the website).

That aside, if you were not satisfied we would have done all that was possible to make your stay an enjoyable one had you talked to us about it at the time - by offering an alternate room, or assistance in operation of your plasma TV & Shower screen which both work perfectly well. Why you instead chose to tell me a tall tale at 10:30pm about your grandmother's dementia is baffling to say the least, particularly when you then accuse us of being deceptive.

The room was repainted last year, our linen is white and freshly laundered and the outdoor furniture is wrought-iron French style furniture which is made in this style. The property is strictly non smoking, and I apologized to you upon check in for any remnant smell due to prior guests unfortunately blatantly ignoring this policy, however the room had been thoroughly aired and cleaned and all linen replaced.

I am sorry that our property did not meet your expectations, however it is impossible to satisfy everyone all of the time.
Yours sincerely
Sophie

we booked in there as the final place on our driving holiday around Tassie. I was quite excited about it because it sounded really nice. we had discount vouchers but even after discount it was around the price we paid elsewhere and pretty much everywhere else had been great value for money compared to other places in AUS, so I was expecting it to be REALLY NICE. we got there and there was no staff to be seen, we waited 15 mins or so and eventually someone came to check us in but I am not sure if it was because they had a wedding there that arvo, or if it was because we were on a discount voucher but we didnt feel like we were welcomed. no smiles, no freindly chat it was just here is your key, breif tour and that was that. i can honestly say that even though we went out of our way to be overly freindly during our stay, not once did we get any nice treatment from the lady who was running the place, it was like she was in a bad mood with us, but we hadnt done anything wrong. Towards the end of our stay, we saw her being really chatty and freindly with other guests so its hard not to take it personally. we stayed in a coach house room.

We have a baby which I told them when we booked so needed a portacot. they put us upstairs which was a bit annoying because we have to bring so much stuff with us, including a heavy pram. but still keeping an open mind. The first thing I did when we got into the room was check the place for potential hazards. the room was quite filthy. i think they probabley do a spot clean if something is spilt but I dont think dusting and vaccuming rate high on their priorities. apparently they serviced our room after the first night, but I am not sure what they did. we didnt get new towels, they didnt make the bed and they didnt refresh toilet paper. In the middle of the second night, I ran out of toilet paper and had to use tissues. there was no facilities for us to heat baby food or clean the bottles and other things. I asked for a large pot which they gave me but again, it seemed like a hassle. there was no basic kitchen facilities just a kettle & the hand basin in the bathroom.

overall, the house has a lot of history and has beautiful grounds but it needs more maintainance and more cleaning.

Hi Samantha,
Thank you for taking the time to complete the review for your recent visit to Hawley House.
We appreciate any feedback and we always consider valid comments in order to continue enhancing our level of service and help meet guest expectations.
We did provide a cot to you at no additional charge (although you were quoted $10 for this service) and the room you booked was a Loft room which is an upstairs room - at no time did you request a downstairs room. As we were fully booked during your stay with us, we regret if you did not receive the individual attention you expected, however we do always make a point of giving a quick tour on arrival before showing guest to their rooms personally and offer to assist with luggage if necessary- no-one is ever just handed a key. The rooms are not advertised as being self-contained and we do not have kitchen facilities as most guests enjoy the ambiance of our lovely dining room , which also gives us the opportunity to chat and discuss travel plans with our guests, which inevitably builds some extra rapport. We happily provide a microwave if requested.
All rooms are serviced daily and towels and toiletries are automatically replaced - this was certainly the case during your 2 day stay, however we do recall that there were large quantities of personal belongings covering the entire bed which made it impossible to make the bed without handling your things. In such an instance we assume that guests did not intend for the bed to be remade by staff. Rooms are dusted and vacuumed before each new guest arrives but not for a service. All rubbish including baby nappies and pizza boxes were also removed from your room.
We regret that you did not enjoy your stay as our aim is to make your experience memorable for all the right reasons, however it is unfortunately not always possible!
Regards
Sophie

My family and I arrived at this hotel at the end of a pretty intense five-week trip around Australia. We were travel weary and ready for home. Hawley House was just perfect for us. When we arrived we were showed to our rooms and even got a little tour around the place. The staff, without exception, were incredibly friendly and helpful.
They did dinner for us even though nobody else had booked for that night! (It was a wednesday and its not a very big place).
It wasn't a restaurant atmosphere at all there, rather like having dinner at a friend's place. Relaxing with a few drinks and then a delicious dinner with great wine was the perfect finish to our trip. Thankyou!

We stayed at Hawley House for only two nights but i would have loved to stay longer. We were on a 10 day trip through Tasmania and this was the nicest place we stayed at. Coming from a big city I love nature and quiteness on my holidays. The beach right down the drive way and the gardens with a lot of little ponds and even a cute little church let us spent hardly any time inside even though we stayed in a  lovely decorated loft room with a homely feeling and a beautiful view over the gardens.
Hawley House is a little far off from everything  but we came with a car anyway and as they do a delicious breakfast and dinner we didn't need anything that we couldn't have got in  the small towncenter 5 minute drive from there.
If we come back to Tasmania one day, we will definitively stay here again!
