“Bushmans Hut”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

Stayed for 2 nights. Freezing outside but lovely and warm in this rustic little cabin. Wildlife practically knocking at our door - wombats, pademelons and possums. Nice touches like plenty of tea, coffee, salt, pepper and even cling wrap make the stay easy. The only thing that needs updating are the mattress and couch which could be a little less rustic.

Our family spent two nights here before walking the Overland Track.
The owners are very helpful and friendly and it is conveniently a 5 min walk to the National Parks office.
The cabin (Pandani) was cosy and had everything we needed for our short stay. We would certainly stay here again.
While my husband, son and I climbed Cradle Mtn, my girls stayed at the cabin and watched DVDs from the extensive library at the office.
We ordered a full breakfast for our last day (before our big walk) but it was so big, we couldn't eat it all. Took some extras on the walk with us and left a few things behind. Next time I would order for just the first morning - it would be enough for two mornings!
We had a friendly little pademelon outside our cabin just after arrival. I believe there are lots more native animals but unfortunately we didn't see them.

I have been to Cradle Mounttain before and stayed elsewhere, but always had this place flagged as somewhere that looked great and was very affordable (I was worried is was too cheap). I had my partner and another couple in tow and was slightly worried about the sleeping arrangements as one of the double beds was in the main lounge area. No problems though - as there is a second toilet for the back bedroom, so there was no issue with waking people up in the middle of the night or early in the morning.

We had stopped on the way to Cradle Mountain and stocked up on two days worth of food (Woolworths). The cooking facilities were good and we cooked a massive pasta bake the first night and a delightlful pork roast - with roasted veges - the second night (tip - buy some disposable foil bake trays for easy cleaup). The wood fire was briliiant and really heated up the entire cabin - needed the heat lights in the bathroom, as it got chilly in there! There were also electric blankets but we didn't turn them on.

As for the animals, they were in the front yard so we could sit inside and watch them or sneak out the door and get a little closer. Mostly we saw wallabies (morning and evening) and a lovely wombat (they come out in the early evenings). There was also a cheeky possum that hung about.

We were really close to the information centre for the shuttle and only a short drive to many smaller walks and to Dove Lake.

All in all - we all loved this place and as my partner propsed to me at Dove Lake we would love to come back here for our honeymoon!

My goodness what a wonderful place to stay. Clean, tidy and very homely. The wood fire made it cosy & very warm. The owners are so welcoming and the basket of breakfast goodies are delicious. It was close (within walking distance) to the bus shuttle that takes you to the park walks. If we ever visit Cradle Mountain again we won't look to stay anywhere but here. Really loved it. Nice to walk amongst the varied wildlife as well.

My adult daughter & I recently spent just one night (sadly, in retrospect) in the Wombat Cabin. On arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome by the lovely, friendly, smiling faces at the reception desk, which is always a great start. We hadn't pre-booked a breakfast basket, so ordered one for the following morning. It was rather late notice & the manager apologised for running out of yoghurt (which would normally be included in the breakfast basket). We weren't bothered at all & completely understood, though the manager insisted on discounting the price of our breakfast basket to compensate & advised he would deliver it to our cabin shortly. I thought this was a very nice gesture. Then, five minutes after we stepped inside our cabin, the manager arrived with a very generously laden basket of breakfast goodies. In addition to the discount he had already given us, there were also extra goodies included (a packet of ground coffee & a box of Tassie chocolate fudge!) We were quite overwhelmed with the level of care & generosity shown...an extraordinarily high standard of service not often seen in Australia. Even without the extra treats, I thought the breakfast basket was generous & good value for money...so when you book your cabin, I recommend booking the breakfast basket at the same time.

The cabin itself exceeded my expectations. It was warm & inviting as you would imagine a "rustic" style log cabin to be. It was also impeccably clean. We lit the fire in the perfectly sized cast iron wood burner immediately, which kept us cosy all night long...plenty of wood, fire starters & matches were supplied. There was a very spacious sleeping/living area with super comfy beds, electric blankets, extra blankets, timber table & bench seats, sofa & tv. The bathroom was perfect (the shower fantastic) & the separate fully equipped kitchen ideal for longer stays. The location of the cabins is beautiful...surrounded by nature, tranquil & rejuvenating. As wonderful as every aspect of our stay at the Highlanders was however, the highlight for us, coming from Queensland, was the magical experience of waking up to snow falling softly outside our cabin window the following morning. It's a very special experience to have in December in Australia, when you're accustomed to long, hot, humid summers! A memory we'll treasure always. I highly recommend the Cradle Mountain Highlanders Cottages to anyone planning a visit to the area. You won't be disappointed!!! We can't wait to return.

We stayed for two nights in Woodsmoke which was extremely comfortable, cosy and clean. The locally sourced breakfast provisions were very generous and delicious.

During the day we did the walk around Dove Lake (the visitor centre and shuttle bus is literally just down the road) which is long (2 hours walking, 3 hours if you stop to take lots of photos/have a snack) and at times tiring but the views and wildlife make it totally worth it.

The owners are very friendly and willing to give advice. Their good selection of free DVD's come in handy when its cooler in the evening and the woodfire is burning.

Really enjoyable stay. Definitely recommend this - a highlight in our trip to Tasmania. We will be back!

We chose this place due to its rustic nature and bush setting. Each cabin is surrounded by trees and there's lot of visiting wildlife (which the kids loved) - we saw echidnas, wombats and wallabies. Our group occupied the Pandani and Stringybark cabins, both of which were well equipped and nicely sized although I preferred the layout and location of Stringybark. Note: for some units the car park is 10-20m away from the cabin, which is generally no problem unless you have large luggage to drag. For Stringybark the parking is at the front of the cabin.

We cooked one dinner in Stringybark and the kitchen was perfectly adequate for the task. The log fire heater warmed up the unit well. I also liked the firm beds. All in all, this would be my first choice for accommodation at Cradle Mt.
