we traveled as a group of 6 friends. No complaints really. the cabins have heaters, big fridge, all basic cutlery etc... Location was good and close (probably the closest) to Cradle Mountain
Toilet outside, have shower facility there
we took linen for additional $11. All decent and good

We knew this place was tucked away, so instead of choosing the usual type of places we decided to stay at Waldheim cabins for what we hoped would be a rustic feel. The cabin itself had a lot of potential, but it was a bit too stark and not enough comforts for us. The two bunk set up was also a bit ordinary and we hadn't realised that was the situation before we had booked, otherwise we would have probably decided to stay elsewhere.

There were some scraps left over from previous customers which we promptly had to clean out. On discovery of this, we were unsure of how clean everything was, so we set about boiling some water and recleaning any utensils that we intended to use and decided not to use the communal shower block (instead we waited until our next destination).

We thought that the place may be OK for people about to start the Overland Track due to its proximity, however, as far as holidaying in Tasmania goes, we would recommend staying at a more comfortable facility. We didn't feel that there was any real service provided to make customers feel special.

Amazingly beautiful cottage, worth every dollar. We would recommend to stay here over the Lodge or the Holiday Park. This place is totally magical. Back to basics, totally surrounded by serenity. And a fantastic place to launch your overland Trek from, or just a simple day walk! Do it. You will not forget this place.

My daughter and I stayed one night prior to starting the Overland Track in January 2013. It is only 60 meters from the start of the track so it is a great location to acclimatise and enjoy Cradle Mountain before you start the Track. The cabins are very clean and well provisioned with cups, plates, cooking utensils and a stove. The communal bathroom/toilets were clean also. The scenery is amazing and wildlife was just everywhere. Highly recommend if you are either starting the Track or just want a few days to unwind.

Room Tip: Ask for linen - it as a small surcharge but worth it.

Cradle Mountain National Park is an extraordinary place. There are so many options here, from short walks of half an hour all the way to the five day long Overland Track. Bunya Cabin at Waldheim is amongst the King Billy pines, myrtles and pandani, and right next to the reconstructed Waldheim Hut, built by Gustav Weindorfer and his wife Kate at the start of last century. It is astonishing, and has been set up to tell the story of the couple and their dedication to having Cradle Mountain declared a national park, for all to enjoy.

We arrived in the snow (in January) and found our two-bunk cabin tiny but clean and well equipped. The convection heater kept s cosy, and we were able to cook on the full electric stove and oven. There are power points so we were able to charge our camera batteries. The single bunks had good mattresses and we'd taken our own bedding. The toilets and showers are close- very clean with good hot water for warming up after bush walking in the rain.

The view at the end of the cabins is stunning, across the button grass plains of Cradle Valley and up to Cradle Mountain. There are stands of ancient pandani, myrtle and King Billy pines, and pademelons and Bennett's wallabies graze everywhere. You need to be equipped for all kinds of weather when you come to Cradle Mountain, but a walk in the sleet up to Wombat Pools was a highlight of our trip.

I stayed at Waldheim Cabins for one night prior to setting off on the Overland Track.

This is basic accommodation but I have given it a very good rating because it is better than the online literature suggests, it is historic, it is in a great location for walkers (and easily accessible by car), the huts are well equipped and warm.

There are a variety of sizes of hut all with bunk style beds with foam rubber type mattresses. You can use your own bedding (eg sleeping bag) or you can order linen and towels at the time of making your booking. The huts themselves are well equipped with gas stoves, fridges, pots and pans, crockery, cutlery etc. Thery have very effective electric radiator heating.

The location of the huts is brilliant for walkers. You are on the very doorstep of the Overland Track and many day walks.

Two points to note (1) there are no shops etc at Waldheim Cabins so you need to bring foodstuffs etc with you; and (2) toilets and showers are in a communal ablution block which is clean with good hot water in the showers but basic.

I did not take any photos of the cabins but there are good representative photos at the following link:
