Travelling from Launceston to Hobart or vice-versa brings you into the historic town of Campbell Town, located right on the Midlands Highway. Campbell Town is one of the few towns or villages not now bypassed by the highway and the short drive through it is always a welcome break.
Not only are there interesting buildings and cafes, there is this old bridge, the oldest brick arch bridge in Australia (c1838), built entirely of red bricks . Set on the Elizabeth River it is indeed picturesque and with an interesting history trail nearby, it more recently offers truly detailed timber carvings, carved out of the original trees with a chainsaw. These are among Tasmania's finest carvings and are worth inspecting as a point of interest in itself.
A great stopover.
