We decided to stay at Bruny Island for a few nights to get away from it all for my 30th birthday - and Adventure Bay Retreat was the perfect choice.
We stayed in the little stone and wooden couples' cottage on the property, which has a lovely cosy feeling. The cottage is quite open plan and spacious, with a very comfortable bed and couch, spotless kitchen and bathroom and beautiful spa.
The highlight for us was that the cottage overlooked a stretch of grassland where every morning and afternoon we could watch the white and grey wallabies feeding. The cottage is set quite far back from any other houses and quite close to bushland, which made it refreshingly quiet. It's not on the beach, but only a short walk down a gravel driveway to get there. (It's also only a short walk to the location for Bruny Island Cruises, which I'd highly recommend!)
One of the other things that made this place stand out from other accommodation we've stayed in was the little extras. I'm not usually fussy about appliances on holidays, but I have to say that the De Longhi coffee machine, quality stove top, knives that actually worked and the Bose sound system did really make an impression on me. We also had a lovely bottle of Tassie sparkling wine waiting for us when we got to the cottage, and it was well kitted out with basic supplies as well as coffee pods and loose leaf Tasmanian tea.
We loved Bruny Island itself. We only did short walks but really enjoyed the walk to Grass Point in the national park, the Mavista nature walk and strolling along beautiful Adventure Bay Beach (the spot opposite the berry farm is great for a photograph). The island also has a lot of foodie offerings including the smoke house, the cherry shed just off the ferry (in season) the Bruny Island Cheese Co, the fudge factory, the berry farm and Bruny Island Premium Wines - their lunch platters looked amazing for anyone who is interested from a break in self-catering. We even paid a visit to the local bowls club for a drink.
I can't recommend this place enough for anyone who is looking for a refreshing and relaxing break with a few creature comforts thrown in.
