“Amazing stay with white wallabies on our doorstep”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2014

We decided to stay at Bruny Island for a few nights to get away from it all for my 30th birthday - and Adventure Bay Retreat was the perfect choice.

We stayed in the little stone and wooden couples' cottage on the property, which has a lovely cosy feeling. The cottage is quite open plan and spacious, with a very comfortable bed and couch, spotless kitchen and bathroom and beautiful spa.

The highlight for us was that the cottage overlooked a stretch of grassland where every morning and afternoon we could watch the white and grey wallabies feeding. The cottage is set quite far back from any other houses and quite close to bushland, which made it refreshingly quiet. It's not on the beach, but only a short walk down a gravel driveway to get there. (It's also only a short walk to the location for Bruny Island Cruises, which I'd highly recommend!)

One of the other things that made this place stand out from other accommodation we've stayed in was the little extras. I'm not usually fussy about appliances on holidays, but I have to say that the De Longhi coffee machine, quality stove top, knives that actually worked and the Bose sound system did really make an impression on me. We also had a lovely bottle of Tassie sparkling wine waiting for us when we got to the cottage, and it was well kitted out with basic supplies as well as coffee pods and loose leaf Tasmanian tea.

We loved Bruny Island itself. We only did short walks but really enjoyed the walk to Grass Point in the national park, the Mavista nature walk and strolling along beautiful Adventure Bay Beach (the spot opposite the berry farm is great for a photograph). The island also has a lot of foodie offerings including the smoke house, the cherry shed just off the ferry (in season) the Bruny Island Cheese Co, the fudge factory, the berry farm and Bruny Island Premium Wines - their lunch platters looked amazing for anyone who is interested from a break in self-catering. We even paid a visit to the local bowls club for a drink.

I can't recommend this place enough for anyone who is looking for a refreshing and relaxing break with a few creature comforts thrown in.

Bruny Island itself is underestimated and we had no idea what we were getting as my niece made all the bookings.
We arrived to a wonderfully warm house as the underfloor heating was switched on. A very nice touch especially as we live in Singapore and Tasmania been "cold"
A bottle of local Tasmania's sparkling wine was on the table as a welcome gift. We also had the lovely surprise to see wallabies in the garden and double surprised to see a White Wallaby which is unique to Bruny Island
The house was spotless clean and inviting. A fire had been all prepared for us and all we had to do was light it. As we brought supplies with us from Hobart the kitchen was state of the art and a pleasure to cook in while a fire was on in the lounge.
As I am allergic to Down duvets they had purchased a synthetic duvet especially for me without a charge to us.
The pantry was stocked with basics with was enough for our meals.
Outside was a 6 or 8 set table with a bbq. We ate or lunch outside in the beautiful sun.
All the bedrooms are beautiful and the master bathroom has the egg bath and the other bathroom has a rain shower. Something my husband can not live without.
There is also a upstairs "Den" for teenagers to hang out. In short everything had been well thought out and we did not want to leave.
2 days was too short and we coming back.

Room Tip: Perfect for a family or couple or couples

Just spent 4 nights at this stunning retreat. The accommodation in this superbly located stone cottage was perfect. Attention to detail does
Make all the difference like pod coffee machine, milk frother, loose leaf tea (2 types), fully equipped kitchen, champagne on arrival (and for the discerning traveller, wine glasses to match all types of wine), selection of DVD's and fireplace ready to strike your match - what more could you want - well wildlife galore! White wallabies visited each morning and night and were among the many visitors of bird life and other interesting creatures which came to say hi. This place was beautifully quite, with the only noise being the birds and the crashing of the waves from the ocean nearby. The spa was a perfect way to finish off a day of wandering. Among the many walks we did on this island, I recommend a short little walk from the road at the end of adventure bay, start along the beach and following the water to your left, right out to the point where you will see just about every type of nature setting you could think of and the end be rewarded with a beautiful grassy area just before you reach the rocky end - take your time remembering to stop along the way to take in the setting - we did many amazing longer walks but this was just relaxing and very scenic and when done at a meandering pace, was very rewarding. Enjoy!
