“Beautiful place, poorly managed!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

Amazing place to visit, the scenery and the historic caves house are excellent.

The caves house is in poor state of repair (e.g. makeshift central heating pipes insulation, shower taps falling off).

The restaurant is overpriced, charging $30-40 for most of the meals, which are quite bad - the chef needs replacing (if there is one, which I doubt). Cheese platter desert was good quality and value.

The bar staff was rude (an Asian lady), the wines were overpriced - paid $35 for the cheapest clean skin bottle (which, however, turned out very nice).

One member of waiting staff OK (a lady with some kind of accent), one EXCELLENT (a guy with Irish-like accent) - thank you! :)

Over all, what an amazing waste of this beautifully presented heritage grand dining room! What a shameful waste of this outstanding, unique venue in general!

I stay about once a year, as this is the only place to stay at Jenolan Cave, and unfortunately, it's always been like this. Haven't seen any improvement. Shame on the management, I say.

One last complaint - the printed maps and signposted maps and directions are inconsistent and some outdated. Very easy to get lost at some places ...

The day bistro serves junk food only. (A really bad kind.) You will do well if you bring your own food & drink, or restrict yourself to dinners only and choose your meals wisely (I can recommend the cheese platter only). A soup might be another safe option.

I just don't understand why does it have to be this bad? So much wasted potential!

Room Tip: Heritage rooms (shared showers) in the original old caves house are good value

Jenolan Caves Cottages were very warm and cozy. Very easy too use gas fire place. A fun place for a family with loads of wallabies and kangaroos. Under $200 a night for 6 people is a bargain. Very basic but all you need. Took less than 10 minutes to get back and forth from the caves. We booked the older kids on the adventure tour which was awesome!

We didn't find out till we attempted to check in that the cottages were 8 km away from the caves. That didn't turn out to be a problem though as the location and self catering facilities made up for that. The kids were happy to have a playground right out front of the cabin, and every day we saw plenty of kangaroos right up close. There were even wombat holes in the bush nearby. The heating was great, as was the hot water. The only issue we had was having to pump our drinking water via an attachment on top of the large water filter bottles. As for the caves, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining and we all enjoyed the free self guided tour you can take.

Room Tip: If you like to get away from the crowd and self cater, go for the cottage rooms.

We spent one evening in caves house this week and the accommodation was ok. Nice old grand building which was adequate for a nights stay after an evening tour. However, I'm happy we were only there one night though as the restaurant was terrible. You pay an average of $35+ for a main meal and the quality is just not there. My husband and I ordered the salmon, mduck and sticky date pudding- all of which were overlooked and dry. For a $100 meal we were less than impressed. The cave tours are magnificent but this accommodation fell well below our expectations.

We went to Jenolan Caves last weekend and stayed at caves house. Now its about 20 years since I was last there but nothing has changed. I know the hotel is old but it's about time they did some major refurbishment,. We had our small granchildren with us and so we had to eat early in Jeramiah's cafe, but once dinner was over there was NOTHING to do. The rooms are very small, and Sooo overheated. No TV. The bathroom was so small that only 1 person could stand in it at a time. Get with the times caves house. We want flat screen TV's, with sattelite.
The caves them selves also need an overhaul. People expect more these days. They were exhausting, and really quite boring. They really need to bring them out of the last century. No wonder there were no young people there.

Room Tip: There were none.

We had a booking through the Jenolan Caves House for a self contained cottage (8km from cave). There was works on the main access road at night (this was only told to us AFTER we booked and paid for the accommodation) which prevented us from having dinner in the restaurant or being able to do the late night cave tour which my family was looking forward to doing. The Jenolan Caves front of house staff were not sympathetic to our position. The cottage was isolated from all night time activities which would have been available to travellers staying at the Jenolan Caves House and was very disappointing as it was not clean. The only good thing about the cottage was the gas fireplace. The cave tour experience itself was fantastic, the guide was amazing, very knowedgable and made the tour enjoyable. Highly recommend the cave tour NOT the accommodation.

Room Tip: Dearest accommodation we had on our family trip and by far the worst.
