My wife and I were having a great vacation in January (17-22) until the last night.......
The setting at Verana is spectacular, and the food (priority #1 on our holidays) was excellent - an interesting tidbit is that the chef is a local Yelapian who came home after training around North America. We found the staff to be friendly and unobtrusive. If you're interested, you can get excellent local 'color' from staff members. We took a long hike to a nearby beach with a local from the resort who opened our eyes to rural mexican life - and another staff member who spent some time with us around Yelapa itself (thanks Valdo and Alfredo - this was the highlight for us).
But........on the last night as I climbed into the mosquito netting and pulled back the sheets......there was a coral snake trapped in our bed inside the mosquito netting (very venomous, and yes it was definitely a coral snake).
We weren't able to contact anyone to help us at first. No one told us when we arrived that there is an emergency phone on site nor where it is. When I found it myself walking around at midnight and tried to use it, there was either no answer at some numbers or just a Spanish voicemail recording. We had to find, trap, and kill the snake in our room ourselves at 12:30am using a broomstick and a rock with some help from a bartender who we caught just as he was about to leave the resort for town. He told us that there was supposed to be a night watchman around, but no sign of him the whole hour we were dealing with this or after either.
Now, I'm not squeamish and appreciate we're staying in the jungle and might come across something dangerous, but my issues are these: 1) the resort didn't seem prepared for a problem at night like this or otherwise - there should be a way to contact help and it should be made clear to guests on arrival - you are remote here, Yelapa is an hour by boat from PV, and there's seemingly no emergency care in town 2) how does a snake get into your bed anyhow? Maybe the turn down service should include a look for the odd jungle critter in the sheets when they tuck in your mosquito netting (it couldn't of got in after...) and most of all...... 3) despite telling the staff about it the next morning and it being the topic of conversation among all the other guests, we didn't hear a word from management that day and haven't since. I've waited a few weeks now to write in case we did.
Can't imagine what we would have done if my wife had slid into bed first and would have been bit by a venomous snake.....at midnight......20 minutes from town.....and an hour by boat at night from PV.
Other than this episode and my beef with the management over this, it was a decent getaway. But for us next time when we're looking for luxury away from our kids, it won't be in close proximity to poisononus reptiles.
