“Warm and Friendly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2012

Despite our prior two trips and our recent relocation full time to Yelapa, Diana and I (Memo) had not visited this restaurant. A posted hand bill identified that a current movie would be featured; complimented by the restaurant’s corner-stone offerings of vegetable curry and good ole’ American meatloaf. After very little discussion we made the trip. Passion Flower is nestled up the hill just off the main path. The atmosphere is warm and friendly paralleling that of the owner, April. The seating arrangement was family style with tables linked together. Our drink order was taken and promptly returned. Overall the service was excellent. Diana selected the curry; I chose the meatloaf. While the servings were substantial and the presentation pleasing, we both felt the entrees fell short in the area of overall flavor. Perhaps it was just an off night, we’ll try again.

“Atmospheric home cooking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2011

This place has meatloaf, veggie curry, salad, and other American delights in a beautiful garden setting. We watched Love Actually on her TV (does movie nights weekly) and enjoyed the delicious passion fruit cocktails. Lots of locals too... Did get very sick next morning w stomach issues and I'm not sure if this was the source but up until that point I enjoyed!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2011

We ate at Passion Flower 3 times durin our 4-day stay. The food was excellent -- very fresh and well-seasoned. We especially loved the calamari. The fish tacos were excellent, too.

“The best food and catering!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2010

We first contacted April by email to inquire about catering for our wedding reception and rehearsal dinner. Soon after, we returned to Yelapa, and got to meet April in person, and once we tasted her food at Passionflower Gardens, we knew we were in good hands for the wedding dinners and hors d'oeuvres. Her meals are hearty, creative, healthy, and just plain well done. And the passionfruit- and mango-based beverages, alcoholic and non, are out of this world--as are the desserts.

Everything is delicious, and since one of us is a vegetarian (accustomed to being an afterthought and getting served some random pasta or a tiny slice of not-very-caloric food at restaurants and events), we were thrilled to note that April's repertoire includes a wide range of options for both carnivores and veg folks.

Ask anyone in Yelapa: April cooks, and Jose bartends, with skill and heart; and Passionflower Gardens is the place to be on Monday and Thursday evenings in Yelapa. We're told that April and Jose are key players in Yelapa's famous croquet tournament, too, but we've never been there during that particular week.

But April didn't just cook for our wedding events; she ended up being more like the magical concierge of Yelapa, giving us the scoop on what is and isn't possible in town, helping us find entertainment, helping the wedding venue proprietors to find fairy lights, arranging for tablecloths and napkins, you name it--and then, when the rental place in P.V. ignored her reservation and gave the tablecloths and napkins she'd reserved for us to someone else, *buying fabric and making the tablecloths herself the day before the wedding, when she was also responsible for the rehearsal dinner that evening* . With that heroic act alone she saved the ambiance of our reception.

When we decided on a February wedding in Yelapa, we knew we'd face many difficulties resulting from planning the event from thousands of miles away, and holding the event in a town only accessible by boat where very few people are easily reachable by telephone or email. But we knew that the weather would be great--after all, rain in Dec. was rare, in Jan. extremely rare, and in Feb unheard of.

Until this year: 2009-2010 was an El Nin~o year with freak winter rainstorms all through the season, up to and including early Feb., right before our wedding. Of course, knowing that the weather in Feb. was sure to be dry and warm, we planned all of our events for outside. With less than two weeks to our wedding and storms continuing to threaten Yelapa with serious rain, we turned to April to ask advice on how to keep our guests comfortable, and she quickly gave us her analysis of the options we had and what they would cost, and offered to arrange to have tarps put up for our wedding and reception if needed. Fortunately, the weather turned around and was gorgeous for the weekend, so we didn't need to test April's resourcefulness (again!), but it made a huge difference knowing we could count on someone local to make things happen--no small feat in Yelapa!

To sum up: April's food is fantastic, Jose's drinks are just what the doctor ordered, the restaurant is a special gathering spot, and if like us you ever need to rely on her for catering and all-around event logistics heroism, she will come through for you. Best caterer ever. We will always be grateful to April for all she did to make our wedding the success it was.
