“Short but sweet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2007

Our stay was short and sweet as we were just passing through Bognor on a trip round the UK from NZ, and as were were without kids this won't exactly be a comprehensive review of Butlin's in general.
However what we saw of the Shoreline Hotel we liked, our room on the 4th floor was more towards the sea end of the building so had good views and it was quiet. I guess being nearer the resort end would be noisier. Our room was very clean, and we could find no fault with anything - lovely leather armchairs, king-size bed, TV, DVD, bar fridge, safe, toiletries, hairdryer, iron and ironing board. If I had to make a criticism it would be that the bed was a little too firm for my liking, but that's personal preference and somebody else might find that a bonus.
We didn't dine in the restaurant that night as we had plans elsewhere but breakfast was more than ample with heaps of choice of both hot and cold food. The noise level was very high, but only to be expected in a hotel with such a big family focus. After being a bit doubtful about the coffee machine I have to say that my cappuccino was excellent and of course it was a bottomless cup ! In fact after a breakfast as big as you want to make it, you wouldn't really need to eat again until dinnertime !
The only other comment I would like to make is how friendly and helpful all the staff were, especially the receptionists and the lovely restaurant manager, Kathryn.

level - two

This is our third trip in three years to this Hotel and we would only stay in these paricular rooms. There is a lot of room and the view is wonderful the higher you go the better the view. If you do have young children there is a ground floor Nelson Suite with patio - but everybody stares in when passing.

The rooms are very nice and the furniture is lovely, the TV does have skyview at no extra charge along with DVD and a playstation for the childrens room. The rooms could now do with some fresh paint to give them a lift rather grubby paintwork with marks all over the place. The windows could do with a good clean and the cleaners could get their employers to invest in window cleaner as ours were full of sticky toffee - red kind and finger marks....But on the whole they are clean on the surface. There is a safe facility which is free and tv in the children's room-along with air-conditioner.

We ate in the restaurant twice and the food is of good quality but would advise you to book and is not cheap but is up market food in the Shoreline restaurant. We went bed and breakfast and you wont starve plenty to eat and clean.

Well what can I say Butlins is Butlins and that won't change the funfair is good for the kids the slot machines a pain and the entertainment would be just what you expect - but the kids like it. This is where some serious money could be spent to bring it into this century as it is so basic , I DO BELEIVE THEY ARE BUILDING a sister hotel in the shape of a ship so another 10 million pounds being spent - try putting some into the facilities at hand. We went out a lot to view other venues so that did not bother us as the accomodation is very good on the whole and this hotel has a nice feel about it.

Once outside the Hotel you enter the Butlins complex and it is dirty and the toilets need to brought into this century also. The swim place is good with lots of slides and if you a Shoreline guest you get a free hour for this hotel only in the swim complex and that is a bonus beleive me. Out door pool probably been there since it opened not a lot of people participating but the weather was not that warm.

This is out third visit to Shoreline Hotel and we will be taking a break from it for a few years now - prices has got very expensive especially for school holidays bank holiday weekend next year for three nights is over £700 and the weekend after is £622 so if you think this is a cheap hotel think again not if you book the state rooms but well worth the extra believe me.

We enjoyed this break but we fly down and that pushes up our cost so next year somewere nearer to home for our final summer break I think but you will like the hotel and food. The staff are very nice and went out of their way to help us no complaints about them at all a big thank you to the reception staff who go the extra mile to help you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2007

My wife and I took our 1 year old to stay at the Shoreline in July 07 for a 4 night family break. Having stayed in the chalets before on a stag weekend I was aware of how basic they were so I was keen to stay in better accommodation.

We stayed in Columbus' Quarters which have a partial sea view but no balcony or terrace. I've tried to concentrate this review on the hotel itself rather than the Butlins resort as a whole, which is in need of major investment as it was really tatty overall which is even more evident now the inside areas are not covered in a fog of cigarette smoke.

Hotel Good points:
- Hotel and rooms are new and very clean,
- Great power shower
- Good views out to see, if you ignore the building site
- Hotel is totally smoke free, including all rooms
- Child-friendly, high chairs available in the restaurant
- No-Fee ATM in the lobby (pay £1.25 elsewhere in the resort)
- Decent breakfast, plenty of choice
- Mini fridge in room

Not so good points:
- TV in room only had 4 channels (how difficult would it be for them to extend the Sky service they have in the sports bar to the hotel rooms as well)
- Pillows really hard, not great to sleep on
- noise from corridor kept baby awake
- Bar area is a little small, only seating for about 10 people
- Drinks in bar more expensive than rest of resort
- No room service, no newspaper delivery service
- No mini bar
- Bath is very narrow
- Housekeeping staff took our clothes and discarded as rubbish!
There were 2 open carrier bags with dirty clothes on the floor by the bed and the housekeeping staff took these and threw them away thinking they were rubbish! In all there was about £90 worth of adult and baby clothes, many from our son's recent 1st birthday, and the hotel have said we must now go out and buy them again, send the receipts and they will reimburse us. However, the point is that we have to do this in our own time out of our own expense because of their negligence. The worst thing was the hotel manager said he only had our word for it about what was taken which was basically implying that we were lying!

Anyway this caused my wife to get upset so we came home a day early, which actually saved us money as everywhere you look in Butlins you have to spend cash, also there is virtually nothing a 1 year old can do apart from go on the toddlers' soft play area as all the rides are for older kids.

Never mind, you learn from experience and my experience tells me that although Butlins are doing their best, unfortuately with their attitude they will not improve their resort or get a different type of guest to want to stay there. If you want to eat overpriced bad quality fatty foods, play on expensive arcade machines all day, queue up for evening shows which are upstairs and have to carry your pushchair with you, then fine, but I'd stick with short adult breaks where you are too drunk to care if I were you.

The best thing about our break was the smoking ban, but even that wasn't their decision!
