We had booked a four day break between the 4th and 8th of March 2013 and it was the first time that we have ever been to Butlins. I did want the Shoreline hotel but its shut down at the moment for routine repairs and referb. So we booked the Wave. When we arrived we were able to park in the main car park at the front of the hotel however the car was not staying as we were dropped off on this break. We were very impressed with the look and feel of the hotel and were allocated the 2nd floor at the back of the hotel. I didn't ask for a sea view so this was fine. 1st and 2nd floors don't have balcony's but this is fine with me as I have vertigo anyway. We had Premium dining and were assigned the Deck Restaurant and it was very good but I wish someone had pointed out to me that I could of asked for vouchers to eat at Turners or Papa Johns if I had wanted as I did not notice the signs that said this. So that's a shame but I do know for next time. The staff of the deck were lovely as were the staff at the wave. Now on day two of our holiday our eldest daughter became very ill with a temp of over 40.2 and vomiting. The hotel staff asked me to fill in a special form with all details of where she ate and what we had done over the last 24 hours. They were also exceptionally helpful and kind with us when my daughter threw up all over the beds and carpets. With one cleaning member of staff coming at at 12.30 at night to clean our carpet.
The following day the self service style of the restaurant was changed to staff dishing up your food and making everyone Purell their hands on the way in. As a precaution as there was now a vomit bug going around (no NOT food poisoning) just a bug. They doubled their cleaning as I noted that they were going around the lobby of the Wave about 5 times a day wiping down everything with cleaner. Then on Thursday they shut the games room in the Wave to clean up the equipment and also to prevent further infection.
Although its a shame the one week I finally decided to go to Butlins is the week that a bug is going around it was by no means the resorts fault. After all you cant control if someone brings a bug with them to the place where there is a concentrated amount of people. We did get to enjoy a bit of the shows Thomas The Tank Engine being one of them and that was very good. The Fairy Make Over at the salon for little girls was lovely and my two girls loved it!. All in all the staff were falling over themselves to be helpful and kind I only got slightly miffed with 2 of them during the whole stay and it was very minor.
The room was very clean I love that you even get a little fridge to put your milk and wine in and the hairdryer is included in all rooms. Yes I did get excited about that as I hate packing electrical equipment. I brought my own travel cot for my one year old but they do provide for a £5.00 a week if you prefer.. The resort its self was great with lots to do and more free than I was expecting to be honest. Also my husband wanted a go at the climbing wall and it was £5.00 which I don't think was that bad to be honest and he got a few goes.
Now I only have a couple of suggestions (hence four stars and not five) that I do think they HAVE to take note of (I will be emailing them) 1. Mattress Protectors. They don't have them!! WHY? they have not skimped on any of the features or décor or cleanliness so why forget such a basic thing!? Butlins you need a smack on the wrist this is naughty! GET SOME ON THOSE BEDS! . 2. 'The Rosso bar' the sofa chairs and carpet were very manky letting you (butlins) and the rest of a very good resort down. PLEASE sort this out as its not nice. Other than that this was a great place to go and I will go again (hopefully to the Shoreline) and hopefully we wont be ill next time. My kids did really love it and I was very impressed.
