“Quick Stop on Business”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2006

Stayed for one night on business. Was allocated a new room in the 'Orchard Mews' block, which I was aware of at the time of booking as main house is mid-refurb. Beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean. OK so you have to go outside to get to the restaurant but it doesn't bother me - it's only a 1-2 minute stroll or if you are really lazy or it's raining - drive! Fab grounds but we came in the back way and the driveway had loads of sleeping policeman, in fact, too many, but if that's the only way people will slow down I guess it's understandable. Didn't get time to go in the Spa unfortunately, but the evening meal was superb and breakfast was also good and plentiful. Only negative? Some daft Corporate HR party going on, so at one point while eating our meal we were serenaded by THREE simultaneous sets of music, ranging from 'piano interludes' to 'the Addams Family'. A somewhat surreal experience which suited us after a hard day at the office and made us laugh, but I think would have annoyed me if I wanted a quiet romantic meal, as did the couple in the corner that night ...

We had a newly refurbished room in the Woodlands block . Beautifully clean and staff very friendly and helpful.
There is a lot of building work going on but we didn't find this at all disruptive.
Dining is in the lovely old Hall which is also about to be refurbished.
Food very good and leisure facilities excellent.
Our only critisism is that you have a walk from rooms to main Hall and this could be a problem if raining.

  • Liked — Location and setting
  • Disliked — No covered walkway to dining and bar facilities
  • Tips/Secrets — Take a large brolly just in case!

A beautiful old stately home, we were a little disappointed to be staying in a new block in the grounds. Most of the rooms in the main house were being refurbished & our room was brand new, very modern with great flat screen TV, excellent shower with different settings, etc. The only problem was when it rained as you did have to go outside to get between buildings. The restaurant was a wonderful old room with high ceilings, old paintings, etc. On our first night it was not a great experience (although the food was excellent) due to the restaurant & bar being taken over by very loud, drunk, corporate clients. The second night was much better. This hotel does cater for a lot of companies, so best to check before you book a romantic break! Lovely grounds & nice, helpful staff. A good location for exploring Stratford-upon-Avon & surrounded by beautiful countryside. I think when all the refurbishment is completed it will rate excellent. Just confirm if you want to be in the main house not a new block. A good pool, spa, etc, with free towels.

We stayed at Walton Hall as a timeshare exchange in August 2003. It was at the end of the terrible heatwave that the UK and Europe were experiencing that summer.

We flew in to Birmingham to find no hire car (EasyCar -avoid them like the plague, they were shut even though we had booked & paid and arrived during their advertised opening hours), so had to get a taxi to Walton Hall. No sign posting, it was almost impossible to find. 50 GPB later we arrived. We were unable to get to the supermarket to buy any basics supplies. We explained and asked in reception if it would be possible to buy some milk and bread from the restaurant and were rudely told no, go to the shops 3 miles away. We're used to timeshare in Australia, where you are given a small welcome pack to tide you over!

The 1 br apartment was in a converted stable block, it was dark, drab and very tired. It was hot, no air flow, no fan or air-con. No screens on the windows or door, so were inundated with flying bugs of all sorts.

There was no shower just a bath, toilet flushed erratically. The furniture was hard and uncomfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with cutlery, pans, utensils etc. The rooms had high ceilings, but the curtains only went up to 7 ft. Beyond that was clear glass - the light from the 2-storey apartments across the way shone all night making it impossible to sleep without a pillow over your face! Beds were fairly comfortable, two large singles pushed together.

There is a bar in the main house, and a restaurant which was a bit overpriced but the food was o.k. Same problem with the staff there as in reception - we really felt like we were inconveniencing them, and we didn't ask for anything unusual or complain.

The grounds were pleasant to stroll through. A small family chapel and cemetary were also on the site, which was interesting to look around. There's tennis courts, indoor pool, tourist information etc all in the activities centre - staff here were helpful and friendly. You do need a car for this place (which they do stipulate). It is relatively isolated, but with a car you can easily access all the local eateries and supermarkets. Plenty of on-site car parking. It's about a 15 minute drive into Stratford-upon-Avon.

I won't recommend Walton Hall for anything other than it's location. I wouldn't stay here again.

We have just returned from a 2 night break and wished we had booked in for the week. We contacted the hotel directly after seeing an advert for special deals. As we have children we have trouble finding suitable hotel accommodation and usually resort to travel inns.We were offered a 2 night break with breakfast for 2 adults 2 children and a baby.We knew from the website that the hotel is in the middle of major refurbishment and was assured that it wouldn't be problem.

On arrival we were handed our key to a room in the main house which is a beautiful gothic building in the middle of acres of green land with a lake and it's own church in the grounds. On arriving at our 'room' we discovered a huge 2 bedroom apartment with 2 bathrooms, kitchen area and living room. The view out of the huge windows was of the countryside and gardens.Ok so the apartment is due for a refit i.e wallpaper dated one of the showers not too powerful. But it was immaculately clean, one of the first things I check for.

The staff were lovely and very attentive in spite of being very busy with a wedding. The breakfast was great with the usual English fry up,cereals, fruit and croissants and all served in a lovely high ceilinged dining room.My only regret is that when the property is finished we probably won't be able to afford to stay here, and a couple of extra nights would have enabled us to have used the spa area more which incidently was also very clean and friendly.

My husband booked us a night at this hotel for our 10th wedding anniversary. The photos on the web site looked lovely but it really didnt do it justice.
The setting is amazing, so is the building itself. When we booked we thought it would just be a standard double room but we had infact got a suite complete with kitchen, dining area, lounge, 2 bathrooms and 2 double bedrooms- one of which is on a mezzamine up some spiral stairs.
The meals in the restaurant were first class and so were the staff.
This place is a little gem tucked away in just north of the commercial Stratford-hope it stays that way.

My family of two adults and three children have just stayed one night in a self contained stable block apartment (Clayton), costing £175. On the outside the Hotel is impressive, set in substantial grounds, with swimming pool/ leisure facilities, well located near the M40 and close to Warwick/Stratford Upon Avon.
However, the main building, and the apartment in which we stayed is very tired, and in desperate need of re-furbishment/modernisation. Most disappointing though was the inability to provide the basics. The light shades, and the top of the front door ( which you could see as you came down the stairs) were covered with dead insects, the curtains to the main bedroom, and the shower were both broken and hanging off the rails, and the main bedroom ceiling has a number of water stains. The dishwasher in the kitchen area was broken, which from the sign on it looked like it had been so for some time. The two single beds were very hard and uncomfortable, even for children, and the bedding did not fit properly. We were provided with two complimentary tea bag sachets, one pack of two small biscuits, one sachet of shampoo, and one small soap - how generous for five of us!! Finally, there is a small patio area at the rear of the apartment, with fine views of the car park, leisure centre, and the large construction site. Surely, money would be better spent on bringing up to standard the existing facilities, rather than invest new rooms. One of the influences for booking was the swimming pool, which we did use and would have been fine if we had been on our own - it is far too small for the number of potential users, particularly as it is open to non hotel guests who are members.

This was most certainly not value for money, and we left very disappointed.
