“White Bear more than bearable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

I read earlier comments with some puzzlement, as they were so diverse. We liked the place. The rooms were functional but clean and recently decorated. People were friendly and the bars have great character. I loved the brass plaques on the settles to past (and passed) customers. Our room was missing a kettle, but in response to an earlier comment, I have had to put the kettle on the floor in some good hotels all over the world! Didn't have dinner there, but the Bengal Indian round the corner was very good (it's BYO for booze though). Friday night in the summer was understandably noisy, so don't expect to get to sleep till after 11. But if that's a problem, don't stay in an inn! The traditional English breakfast was excellent, but the scrambled eggs less impressive. Would stay there again.

I stayed here just recently, good service from lady at the bar. I didnt even have to say i was staying there, she noticed my case & went straight away to show me my room. The room was on the top floor overlooking the high street.

Room has tea/coffee facilities, nice shower & was very spacious.

Beautiful old building, packed with old features.

I did not eat here, as I was joining friends at another location - for me it was just a room to sleep the night - to which I had a nice nights sleep.

I would not recommend this pub for a romantic weekend getaway, it is to be fair - in need of some TLC. BUT, if you were looking for a great place to place your head on route to another destination, I would highly recommend it, - value for money & a great nights sleep, along with lovely service from the girl looking after the facilities.

Arrived at our pre-booked accommodation after a days walking looking forward to a clean comfortable en-suite room, what a disappointment. The room was small, shabby, dusty with a badly stained carpet and it was obvious the bathroom had not been cleaned, as the bath was dirty with hairs in it, and the toilet bowl had excrement both inside and outside and dried blood on the pedestal of the washbasin. Unfortunately there was no other accommodation available so we reluctantly stayed put but left early to avoid eating breakfast there. The only good point was that the sheets and towels were clean.

Room Tip: Don't stay here

We were booked into this pub by our walking holiday organiser and were extremely disappointed. We knew that it was an old building and understandably the route to our room was tortuous, however we did expect to find a clean room and ensuite when we got there. We did not. The toilet had not been cleaned for a long time with visible excrement inside and outside the bowl, the shower was filthy and mouldy. The sheets were clean. The room was cold. The smoke detector in our room did not appear to be functioning but I may be wrong - certainly I could not find a way to test it.
Being Easter weekend our organisers were unable to find us any alternative accomodation. Having seen the parts of the accomodation that we were able to view we felt unable to eat breakfast here as we were concerned that the standard of cleanliness in the rooms might also be the same in the kitchen.
We will not be able to recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: Try another pub or B&B

This place is a true provincial hotel and pub. Very welcoming, very friendly, good honest food and drink. In most places you get what you pay for but these guys go the extra mile. Dont be fooled by people who expect something for nothing. Its not possible in this economic climate but staff/people can mske all the difference. Give them a try.

Wish I had read this before I had a similar horrendous steak pie experience to a previous reviewer. Small burnt pie with scant meat and nasty tasting gravy for a ridiculous price Certainly won't be going back there. Shame as it is well located on the square and the lady behind the bar was friendly.

We visited The White Bear one February evening, as we wanted to watch a local football match and they were kind enough to show it for us. Also our dog was welcome there.

We decided to have dinner whilst there, and ordered the steak pie. Service was good and very friendly, but the food was sadly a let down. The pies appeared to have manifested themselves from a cheap supermarket freezer; they had very little filling and were burnt around the edges. They were served with frozen crinkle chips and peas. Maybe it was the usual chefs day off, but for £7.95 we expected more. The only bonus was a free glass of wine with each meal!

Overall, a pleasant pub, with service, but let down by the food.
