I stayed at the adjacent Premier Inn. I was tired & hungry and still had work to do after supper. I asked the hotel reception about booking supper, but no, I'd have to walk in and wait.
I walked in at 2030 and waited 5 minutes while several busy staff avoided eye contact. A young chap then arrived and said something. It might have been "Orrightmate?" but it wasn't "Hello, would you like a table". I got a table, under a loudspeaker, and ordered a drink. It didn't arrive until after a second member of staff had asked whether I'd like to order a drink. When I'd ordered food I tried to use my phone, but the wifi that I'd paid for in the PI didn't reach the Harvester. I spent 20 minutes contemplating the patch of shredded carrot left on the carpet by some previous customer, and listening to the muzak between the sqawks of two crying babies, one on either side.
The fish arrived, hot but not tasting particularly fresh. Excitement was provided by the lemon wedge, grilled to a temperature high enough to burn the fingers of the silly customer who thought that it was for squeezing over the fish.
I paid and left, and couldn't face returning for breakfast. I've come to the conclusion that there is a clear difference between in-house Premier Inn restaurants, which are comfortable and professionally-run, and adjacent Harvesters/Beefeaters, which are a lottery. I've become a keen user of PIs over the past year, both for business and occasional weekends away, but I shall start to avoid those edge-of-town ones that rely on a Harvester/Beefeater in lieu of a restaurant. Does anyone know a good pub with decent rooms in Rugby?
Incidentally, if the Harvester website allowed space for a detailed description of problems, I'd have posted my review there instead. I tried and gave up.
