I have just returned from the GN Holidays Carry On New Year weekend - £99 per person Fri to Sun, including Breakfast, Evening Meal, full use of Health Club and 99p bar! I went with my husband and another couple - we had a great time! The hotel is a Grade 2 listed building with some old parts and some new parts. It also has luxury rooms and standard (budget) rooms - so for the price we paid the budget rooms were very good - our friends room was slightly bigger than ours but both were perfectly adequate, with a good clean bathroom, plenty of tea/coffee/hot choc/biscuits, all the toiletries you need and a working TV and remote control. Our room was clean and didn't smell of anything! I didn't notice the smell of smoke anywhere in the hotel, other than on guests that were going outside to smoke. The food was good - plenty of choice for both breakfast and evening meal - carvery as well as other choices e.g. curry/rice/noodles/fish/chips, plus a good choice of starters and desserts, and cheese and biscuits and tea and coffee - full English breakfast plus all the usual choices e.g. fruit/yoghurt/cereals/croissants/toast. Restuarants were busy - you need to book your evening meal table when you arrive but this is clearly explained when you check in - there was a notice board advising of the full weekend details, including where the 99p bars were, and how to book your dinners. There are two restuarants to choose from - both serving the same food.
The Health club is great - lovely pool, sauna, jacuzzi and steam room - our friends used the gym and said that was good too.
The evening entertainment was cheesy - but good fun - only criticism would be the room layout and the bright lights - room was set out like a conference - rows and rows of chairs and not a table in sight - would have been better set out like a pub lounge, with the lights dimmed to create an atmosphere! Mind you we had booked on a 40+ weekend, we were all in our 40's - but we were by far the youngest - so maybe the oldies needed bright lights to guide their way!
The 99p bar was great - we were expecting to get stung on the mixers but a 'dash' of coke in your vodka was just 30p and a bottle of OJ just 99p - two pints to choose from, all the spirits and red/white wine - our round of four drinks was always £5.25 - excellent!
Overall a great weekend, good value for money, friendly and helpful staff (apart from one moody madam behind the bar - but there's always one), lovely hotel (a little rough around the edges but clean and warm, comfy beds), great grounds and lovely Health club! I'd definately go again!
