We stayed in November and met friends there. Wow as you come down the drive the hotel is just beautiful. The inside is traditional 17th Century and we received a complimentary upgrade to the Magnolia which was a stunning four poster suite. However, our friends were in a double and it was still stunning, a squirrel was eating berries in the tree outside their window - delightful! The plan was for the boys to play golf and the girls to spa. My husband tells me the golf course was excellent, very challenging and excellent value for money.
The negatives - There is a lovely pool and jacuzzi but no sauna/spa/therapies available although we did know this from reading other trip adviser comments, however, the paintwork in the spa needed attention it was flaking off the walls and looked poorly maintained and the changing rooms were not very inviting which is a shame as the standard elsewhere in the hotel was outstanding.
The barman - hmm we ordered two glasses of rose champagne he gave us normal champagne when we pointed out it wasn't what we asked for he was not very accommodating and reluctant to replace them, he didn't even apologise, we ended up saying we would take them, then he delivered us our sandwich reeking of cigarettes.
The oak restaurant was lovely, with glorious roaring fire, our waiter Terry was brilliant and even cooked the men steak at the table, unfortunately they were the best meals in the restaurant and I would not eat here again if it was the same chef. I had belly pork and it was served burnt and tasted of an entire salt cellar it was barely edible, the rest of the food was just average and I struggle to see how it has won two rosettes. I would normally complain but it was a very special weekend and did not want to affect what a lovely relaxing time we had been having.
So all that said if the pool got a lick of paint, the (afternoon) barman's mannerisms were addressed and the chef replaced, this place could be five star. Daniel in reception was outstanding and an asset to Nailcote, his service was first class and a pleasure, as was Terry, even the iron was delivered to our room within a minute of asking. The main hotel was beautiful, the bar stylish and rooms authentic, I hope the managers read this and tweak the issues mentioned as we would consider coming back in the future and would still recommend.
