An amazing concept and a very worthwhile project being run at HMP Highdown, Sutton. A charitable organisation focusing on reducing prisoner re-offending and also presenting opportunities for the inmates to acquire skills for employment in the hospitality industry. The Charity has set up a completely modern and attractive restaurant within the prison walls. Visitors are either specially invited or general members of the public can apply to eat at The Clink. It is a bit of a effort to apply and go through security but most people would expect that in a prison. Once you are an accepted guest visitor, the next visit would be easier. The important thing to remember is read carefully any instructions you receive when booking, bring the required ID and your cheque book (if you remember when you last used it!) The Food.....forget ideas about porridge and bread and water. These are Chefs in training producing thoroughly modern British cuisine and for the most part, doing very well at their trade. We did have to return a starter which was not served hot (the other was) but that could happen anywhere. Overall the food was very good and certainly more imaginative than some of the offerings available in Sutton. I would probably consider another visit but have to freely admit, I missed a glass of wine with my meal !
