“Have always loved this place.....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013 via mobile

Until now that is. I had my son home from uni so four of us went for an early dinner on a Saturday evening. The food was great, as usually but the service was beyond awful. We say with finishes plates on our table for 45 minutes and didn't even see a waiter. Then when we did, we asked to see the dessert menu. 20 minutes later I went up and asked for the dessert menu again. 15 minutes later I just thought it's just not worth the effort and went up and asked for the bill. The dessert menu arrived as we were putting out coats on. About £120 with only one glass of wine, 4 mains and 2 starters, which would be fine if the service was at least ok! Overall I've enjoyed this place many times but that evening left a bad taste, if you'll excuse the pun.

“Great for families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

We decided to give this restaurant a try on Sunday and were pleasantly surprised. The place was packed, but there was a nice vibrant atmosphere. We had a party of 7, two of whom were under 3, and the staff were brilliant with all of us. There was quite a wait for the food, but the children were provided with plenty of books and toys to help keep them entertained. The food was very good and I would say that the roast pork was one of the nicest I have had in a restaurant with generous portions, moist meat and crunchy crackling. Yum! It's for those who are looking for a slow lunch!

“Food good, service not so...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

Had supper here last Wednesday with a friend. We were shown to a table, and before we could even take our coats off, let alone sit down, the waiter was talking us through the specials and asking what we wanted to drink! When we declined both and said we wanted to look at the menu, he disappeared for 15 mins! It was not busy, so they were not pushed for time. Please note, we would like some time to sit and collect ourselves, albeit briefly, before having the menu thrust at us, and being talked at. You are there for our convenience, not the other way round!

Luckily the food was actually rather good - so maybe they will read this and smarten up the service.....

“A big disappointment since their extension opened”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

We went for breakfast this morning and the best adjective I can think of to desribe our experience was disappointing. The dining area was massively extended in Autumn 2012 to provide 60 more covers but sadly it appears that the staffing levels both in the kitchen and in the wait staff have not been increased to match.

We arrived at 10.30am to find a busy pub with delicious smells wafting in from the kitchen. After a moderately long wait to be seated (you used to find your own table which was better IMO) we chose our breakfasts from the rather tatty paper menu and settled down to wait.... and wait.... and wait. 45 minutes after ordering we finally received our coffees! It took another 5 minutes for our breakfasts to arrive! We were sitting in the extension which was no more than half full so goodness knows how they manage with diners at every table.

My husband's full English was fine but not as good as it used to be (we have been regulars here for breakfast for years). The scrambled egg was overcooked and more like omelette. There were 2 sausages and one was about half the size of the other. The toast was actually warm bread. My smoked salmon omelette was OK but rather small and slightly undercooked. Also it was served with a dressed salad garnish which strikes me as inappropriate for breakfast. The coffee was good and hot.

Funnily enough, when we asked for the bill it arrived very quickly!

We spoke to several other customers who felt exactly the same as us - that the management/owners have clearly overstretched themselves and need to shape up and increase staff numbers quickly before they lose loyal customers. We will be giving them one more chance!

The Jolly Farmers is my favourite place to eat....good vegetarian options...always a big plus.
Cozy, relaxed, friendly talkative staff. Open fire, gourmet shop...I shall go this weekend!
The Black sticks Creme Brulee is a little piece of heaven...I have now had this five times in a row...Go try it now......
