“New Landlord Makes All The Differnce”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

I have been a regular at The Nelson on and off for a long time now, over the years its been quite hit and miss, BUT I have to say that the new landlord Tom has really turned it round to being a fantastic pub. Its like a different place, It has a great atmosphere now and it works well for just a drink or a lovely meal, It's a beautiful old pub with open fires and beams. We have eaten here twice recently and both times the food has been great. In fact I have had my best ever pudding here last week, which prompted me to write this - Salted Caramel Torte, it was amazing ! You have to try it to believe how good it is. They serve good quality home cooked food, the pub has a great menu and a good selection of wines & beers with friendly staff to boot. I would highly recommend this pub !

“Good atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013 via mobile

The feeling in this pub is like a very cosy front room with the open fire and the welcoming chairs. Great place for a cosy relax, only thing I would say against the places the choice of beer is limited. So if it is real ale you want you may not stay here long

“Great pub, historic and atmospheric.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

This has been a pub for more than a quarter of a millenium and has the atmosphere to match. The brother and sister and their team who run this historic pub have turned it round over the last couple of years from a failed cafe bar (complete with white painted oak beams and chequered floor) into an atmospheric place in which to enjoy a simple pint or a good quality meal at a reasonable price. The cosy low-beamed bar is warm and welcoming whether full or during a quieter period, and the bar staff always friendly and efficient. This is not a restaurant but a pub with food, and I have always found the food to be good and the service efficient. The 'real' beers are Taylor's Landlord, the locally brewed Andwell's Gold Muddler and Coors' Doom Bar, plus a 'guest' ale (when I visited recently it was Hogs Back TEA from just a couple of miles away). A good range of wines for those who prefer grape to grain, too. A great place, my only complaint being that I knocked myself out on the low beam returning from the 'gents' (before I'd had a pint) and would like to see some padding and a warning sign on that doorway!

“To serve or not to serve....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

Lovely pub, great vibe, perfect for an evening drink in a wonderful market town.....but eating is a disaster, the food is pretty good - high end pub grub but the service unbelievable poor, we waited 75 mins for a fairly standard lunch. We were told it will be ready in 5 minutes 4 times. It's always a shame when a pub becomes a food factory, risking a good all round experience for the punter in order to pack em in and fill the till.

“Hit the spot in every way.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013 via mobile

Great menu - not too extensive but comprehensive. Definitely pub grub but to an excellent standard. Fantastic service and a warm, cosy, relaxing atmosphere. Good ales and wine list. What more could you possibly want !
