The rooms are spacious.
They are spotlessly clean. There is a choice of pillows, each room has a bath and shower and there is also a desk area and in my room a chaise longue/sofa bed. However, the room doesn't have an iron or ironing board, or a safe and although the room is massive there isn't proper hanging space. I'm short and I can't even hang up a knee length dress straight on the open hanging rail. Not a good use of the available space.
There are no phones in the room which makes the "Good night guaranteed" "we're just a call away" card suggesting you call them in the event of a problem somewhat of an empty gesture.. Also not great for those who may be vulnerable in any way or in case of emergency.
There is also no security chain on the door.
Wifi is available but you only get 30 free minutes per night. I appreciate this is a budget hotel, so if you're paying £29 a night I think it's more than fair enough that you should pay for wifi. However, the hotel also operates demand led pricing so this week staying on business it's over £135 a night so I'd expect to get free unlimited wifi for that.
Customer service is variable.
Check in desk is automated and unmanned. So this should be quick easy and convenient. However, when I had a problem with my key card on the second night I buzzed for help and was left waiting for over ten minutes because the only receptionist was elsewhere conducting "maintenance". Staff working in the bar could see people waiting but were not interested in helping. And when the receptionist did arrive she seemed more irritated with me and the man ahead of me for disturbing her than apologetic for keeping us waiting.
There was no acknowledgement of our wait or apology for the inconvenience. This was quite different to the friendly staff I'd encountered at breakfast and the evening before when I was checking in.
It's a clean modern hotel, convenient for East Croydon Station, The Home Office, Land Registry, Mott MacDonald and the Whitgift Centre.
It also does a good fresh breakfast with costa coffee and a range of hot and cold options. There is a reasonably priced restaurant and bar.
To be really fair it all depends on what you prioritise.
For me when travelling on business I prefer free unlimited wifi, an iron and ironing board in my room, a generous loyal scheme and great customer service so I will always favour the Hampton a couple of doors down. However this is a great budget option for those who can get a deal by booking in advance and staying for social purposes.
To be fair it would also be my second choice for work stays due to the location and newness of the hotel. But that really is an indictment of the lack of competition in the area.
