I went to visit Croydon Airport recently with a family member who flew from Croydon to Guernsey in the 1950s. The tour guide was excellent - a retired gentleman -who was extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the history of the airport and the early travel requirements. It was an excellent hour beginning with a model of the airport as it used to be. The ages of our tour group ranged from about 7 to 80 and it was excellently interesting to all. ALthough the full airport has since been redeveloped there is still enough to get a really good idea of how travel used to be inside the building and the photos and control tower with a great view of London. There are wonderful historical notes such as suggesting that 'ladies may wish to powder their faces during the flight as it may become rather warm'. How times have changed. The Visitor Centre is a real gem.
