“Awful, wouldn't go back or recommend .”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012 via mobile

Arrived 8 pm Sat night for special evening after finding it in the good food guide. Ordered Calamari starter, almost no Calamari and sent it back. Asked for two rib eyes, came back later only one left ( at 8pm on a Sat night, come on), chose medium lamb cutlets instead, came so rare as almost inedible, the rib eye that did come was ordered rare and came well done, we asked with bread with the soup, it came after the soup, to top it off there was a 12.5% gratuity added to the bill. Cannot understand how they got into the good food guide. If this is what you like, go for it.

“Good food terrible service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

Came in one Friday lunchtime with five other friends, we went for the fixed price two course menu.

The food that turned up was very nice but the service was dreadful, we were in the restaurant for nearly two and a half hours for just two courses! Also, one of the waiters didn't know the difference between spinach and the sea vegetables when giving out the side dishes.

Final problem, the starter most of us chose was deep fried squid. What actually arrived was two small bits of squid and the rest of the plate covered in a little zucchini and lots of deep fried whitebait (which is another starter choice from the a la carte menu). Presumably they ran out of squid and this was their solution but the waitresses was clueless and didnt seem to understand why this wasn't acceptable as a squid starter. Given how long we waited at this point, we gave up and accepted the whitebait with squid on the side... Which was very nice, but not what we ordered!

“Good - and bad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2012

With a friend, we went to Malcolm John's restaurant on South End, not least because of the 25% off food voucher we'd collected from the South Croydon food festival. You can download this offer all through the summer. Unfortunately I wasn't feeling too good, so my judgement is flaky. I had the crab mayonaisse to start - a small portion but tasty, of both white meat and brown meat. My main course sirloin, chosen because it was 250g rather than the 350g rump, rather defeated. There was a lot of fat (easy to cut away), and gristle (less so). But they were fine with giving me a "doggy bag", and I was assured the next day that the meat did taste good. £160 for 3.

So with time to kill on Bank Holiday Monday, we go back. Oh dear! Several of the set menu options are "off", and the table behind us are unable to order the surf and turf 50% off as they don't have any prawns. Another table complain they have been charged more for surf & turf, and are told that's because sirloin was subsituted for rump - hardly their fault. So we give in and go next door.

“Didn't honour an offer that was on their website which was very dissapointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2012 via mobile

We visited the restaurant because they had a deal on their website but were told they would not honour it as they had a fault with their website. They had not kept the site up to date and were advertising old deals as if they were current. RWe felt quite annoyed by this and really felt that we were being talked down to be the staff in the restaurant.

“Not as good as Cassoulet”

A bit of a disappointment after the high standards set by the sister restaurant down the road. Food was average, room very nice
