5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

We booked a day spa to celebrate our sisters birthday. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel special. Our every need wad catered for and anticipated. The spa is set in beautiful grounds, perfect for a stroll or sitting in perfect peace. The staff are friendle and helpful providing what we need before we even ask. There is an air of professional warmth making it easy to relax from the moment we arrived. We will certainly be returning

“Nice but not good enough.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2013

We stayed here for our wedding night. As it was a weekend we had to book a spa break package, which was extra. As we weren't getting there until the evening we had to ask one of the party to check in for us. When we arrived the hotel was in darkness and it was a bit awkward finding our room as there were no staff on. When we got to the room it was lovely and there was a slip to order breakfast but on the slip it said the slip had to be returned by 9pm. We decided to fill in the slip and leave it on reception anyway and explain on the slip we have got there late and then ring reception in the morning to check if we could have breakfast. It was disappointing that breakfast couldn't have been sorted in advance as we had made the hotel very aware that we would be arriving late. Anyway we rang down to reception at 9am to see if we could have breakfast but there was no answer. We decided to get dressed and head down to the restaurant anyway. We were able to have breakfast but we had to wait a good half hour to it to arrive.

After breakfast we went back to use the hot tub but it is not in use on weekends, very disappointing especially as they charge extra on the weekends. We then had our treatments, which we had paid extra to upgrate. The treatment was good except I could hear the person having the treatment next door and their therapist was quite chatty, which was quite distracting. My treatment was not a full hour either despite paying the extra.

When we came to check out, a 20% gratuity had been automatically added to the bill. I do not think that is fair. It was not a cheap stay and if we wanted to leave any extra that should have been our choice. I asked the reception staff to remove the gratuity and I was then subjected to a grilling as to why I wanted the gratuity removed. It was very awkward.

Overall, the location, room and spa is lovely. But we had stressed to the staff on a number of occasions when booking that it was our wedding night and we wanted it to be special and we willing to pay extra but the staff were not very forthcoming. As we arrived later we never received the arrival drink or the evening meal but no alternatives to make up for that were forthcoming. Our family member who checked in wanted to leave a bottle of champagne on ice for us as a nice surprise but he was told this was not possible. It was a nice stay but we had booked Moddershall Oaks because we wanted something fabulous and we're willing to pay for it but just felt let down by the staff and attention to detail. We just expected more.

Dear emh205,

Thank you for your comments, which I have looked into personally.

The review you have written is misleading and I have to correct you on a number of points.

When you arrived on the evening of your wedding, it was past midnight and our latest check in time is published as 10pm. You knew this, as it was pointed out to you when you made the reservation. You also had a family member check in for you earlier in the day due to your late arrival, taking your room key with them. Your reservation notes say you said; you had stayed with us before, therefore finding your way to your room would not be a problem. Had that not been the case we would have made appropriate arrangements.
We serve a hearty breakfast and it is freshly cooked to order. The pre-order ensures prompt service to table. I am sorry that you had a longer than usual wait for your breakfast in the morning.

You say the hot tub was not in use that weekend, which is not true. The weekend of your stay, the hot tub was in use as normal. The hot tub is in use every day, apart from the very rare occasions when breakdown occurs.

At checkout, you say a 20% gratuity had been automatically added to your account. Firstly, the gratuity is 2.5% and secondly, it is a discretionary charge applying to the base package booking only, which can be removed upon request, without questions being asked.

You say you did not receive your evening meal. I should point out, that your package excluded the evening meal, as you were going to be at your wedding reception and would not require the meal. Serving champagne on ice in a bedroom for guests who are arriving at an unknown time beyond midnight is not ideal from a quality point of view; however, it should have been accommodated. I also agree that the welcome drink ought to have been served the following morning and, for both these points, I apologise.

I am sorry you have seen fit to leave such a review, when much of the substance of the negative points you make are inaccurate.

Regards,
Phil Holland

“Not wheelchair friendly!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

Took a wheel chair user for a birthday lunch - booked in advance giving notice. Sadly given no advice on best place to park, entrance to restaurant at the bottom of stairs an no way to notify staff you have arrived. Once finally inside staff friendly and helpful if service is a little slow.

Dear MidgeP,

I am very sorry you were not properly directed upon arrival here. We do have good access to the restaurant and have specially made ramps for that purpose. Our staff are also happy to assist as required. On this occasion you were not directed to the right point and, for that I apologise.

I hope you decide to visit us again and, ask that you let me know in advance, in order that I can personally ensure you are properly looked after.

With my best wishes
Phil Holland

My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing spa-day at Moddershall Oaks this week. Staff were professional, friendly and helpful. Lunch was most enjoyable and everything was as expected. A Five Bubble Spa. Thank you.

“Fantastic stay in peaceful surroundings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

We stayed overnight in the Master suite at Moddershall and it delivered everything it promised. The room was lovely with a separate sitting area, the treatments were very relaxing and reasonably priced and the food was some of the best we've ever had. Definitely worth upgrading as the extras you get are great value. As a spa it is quite small compared to its dedicated rivals (Ragdale, Hoar Cross) but overall it was excellent and we will definitely be going back.
