We went to learn something about Leek history and found that the exhibition space and the lecture theatre had been taken over by a very well researched and curated exhibition of the Leek Embroidery Society, which came as a complete surprise. Small local museums have not usually the ability to put on exhibitions of this calibre and we spend a very happy hour in the Institute. One of the curators was on site (pretending to just mind the exhibits) and gave a great 'beyond the exhibits' lecture.
The Institute also houses the library and the local studies section which has quite a collection of material (although I would wait until the end of the exhibition, if you intend to do any serious research, as the studies room has been temporarily 'annexed').
All in all, I was impressed with the place and with the enthusiasm of the staff and am glad I came and visited.
