I stayed at this lodge 28 & 29 April 2012 as it is conveniently close to the National Arboretum, Alrewas. Arriving by coach from the south, it was necessary to travel past the site (on the opposite side of the dual-carriageway) for 2 or 3 miles, use an overbridge and return southbound. There are a couple of breaks in the central reservation which smaller vehicles can use but ours was prohibited.
Reception went well and the male receptionist was both helpful and efficient. There is a small food vending machine in the foyer. The "Little Chef" restaurant/cafe on the same site had recently closed which made for difficulties when trying to cater for a large party. In the event we bussed our party to The Waterfront Pub and Restaurant, Barton Marina (about 5 minutes away by road, southbound). Returning met with the same problem with the dual carriageway as mentioned earlier.
The best one can say is that this whole building is tired and either needs a lot of money spent on it and its contents, or to close down. (according to a staff member, nothing has been spent on it in its 25 year existance. Being familiar with the travelodge chain of properties it is the worse I have ever encountered, and if I had stayed here as the first experience of their properties I would never have used any of them again. A complaint was made to management, Travelodge HQ and local authority about issues concerning the hot water supply which was dangerous: subsequent information recieved from the local authority Health & Safety Dept. is to the effect that the issue is being dealt with. The accommodation is inferior, the beds are worn out, torn and holed bedlinen is used, the place is unclean.................saving grace? although close to the main road it is quite peaceful!
