“A tale of two hotels !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

Stayed here for a three night break, Sun through to Tuesday. Upon arriving we were informed we were the only guests that night, and that the restaurant wasn't open Monday and Tuesday evenings....fair enough, the hotel website had already informed us of this. But we came downstairs hoping to try one of Mr Millers famous gins...to find the place in complete darkness, and no one around ! Strange, we thought, but wandered around and found refreshment elsewhere.
Monday, and after a lovely breakfast, we headed out for the day. Upon returning late afternoon, we returned to a passable impression of the Marie Celeste....no one around ! We dressed to go out for dinner, and thought to have a drink at the bar before heading out...guess what ?... the whole place was in total darkness....and STILL, no one around...again !!! We crept out through the darkness like people doing a moonlight flit....weird !!
Tuesday, and we were feeling a bit miffed....after another good breakfast we mentioned the lack of bar facilities...and lighting...and people around...and were told that as it was Tuesday the Hotel would be fully operational..? After another day taking in the lovely area, we returned...and ...lo...people !... lighting !....an open bar ! We had booked a table for the evening, and wandered down for the elusive pre prandial...and wow what a difference ! The beautifully furnished lounge which had hitherto been in darkness, was buzzing with people and had great ambience....we enjoyed a wonderful meal in the restaurant, with efficient, friendly service....we couldn't beleive we were in the same place !!!
So, to sum up,a wonderful place with gorgeous rooms, a wonderful lounge bar, beautifully stylised as you would expect from an authority on antiques, and an excellent restaurant...but only when fully operational !!!! Come on Millers, you are either open...or closed.....and if you are open and you take someone's booking, then surely they should be able, at the very least, to get a drink at the bar.....and not have to creep around in the dark !!!!

Room Tip: Room 15 is one of the newer rooms, very smart and comfortable, with excellent contemporary bathroom.

Got a voucher for our stay, thankfully. Hotel is ok cosmetically but fails to be quaint which I think it is after. We were given a room at the top of the building which should have been for a single traveller only, During the night my partner had to clamber over me to use the bathroom; while the room size was just about sufficient for 2 people but not without tripping over each other. Also I had just had a knee operation which they were not aware of beforehand but it was made known to them on the day. We were not offered something on a lower level (there are no lifts) despite the hotel being far from full. Service was again just ok, staff seemed aloof except for the chamber maids and night receptionist. At breakfast we had to chase for our tea, normally the first thing provided elsewhere. This may all seem overly critical but people choose hotels etc based on the details otherwise you would stick with the chains, and it is the details which Millers fails on consistently. Having sampled Millers and others in the locale I know there are much better options within Porlock and the area and at far better value.

Had Fri & Sat night break, the staff are very helpful, food was delicious, room after a heating glitch was wonderful, we had room 11 a suite, could not ask for more, highly recommend. The hotel is ideally placed for seeing the tourist attractions, Porlock has various restaurants, we did not use them ate in hotel both nights.

Room Tip: Room 11 on third floor so lots of stairs but if able worth it!!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your great review. We are pleased that you found the food delicious and that you enjoyed your stay with us.
The cold whether caught us out and the Suite being such a large space needs that extra heat, I am pleased that we resolved the problem in the end. We look forward to welcoming you back to Millers.

Kind Regards

Just spent two nights at Millers Bistro and Hotel in Porlock. Stayed in room 14 which has recently been refurbished. It was very well done to high standards, and the hotel had a relaxing atmosphere. I had no complaints, although I can imagine it being quite noisy at the rear in hot weather. There is an outside area, and the staff smoke outside the kitchen . This could be a problem for guests if they had the bedroom windows open. I found all of the staff extremely pleasant and helpful, and would definitely return.

From the minute we entered the hotel until we left we were made to feel at ease, welcome & part of the family. The room was beautiful even though it had a notice to say it was to be renovated. Our dog was made to feel welcome & loved too! We had a lovely table reserved in the bar and our dag was allowed to be with us.. The meals were 1st class! So we ate there ever night. Lidsey & her staff made us feel as if we were the only people in the hotel, even though they were very busy. WE would certainly recommend it to our friends & family and love to go back!! Thank you for a lovely, relaxing breaK.
