“Don't be fooled into thinking this is a takeaway”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

We have just returned from a weekend camping in Porlock, we had a BBQ on the Friday and following a wander through Porlock on Saturday morning came across Piggy in the Middle. On looking at the menu boards outside we saw that it had a take away menu and that this would be available between 5-9pm - brilliant we thought, so off we went on a walk looking forward to our fish and chips later that evening. On return to our tent we decided to go for a pint at 6 pm and then go and get our fish and chips, so that we could enjoy them hot we got everything ready - knives and forks, plates, kitchen roll, salt and sachets of tartare sauce and ketchup, beers in the cool box - sorted! We then left the tent and went for a pint at the Ship Inn, just before 7pm we hot footed it to Piggy. On arrival, we walked into the restaurant and stated we would like a fish and chips to takeaway, the lady replied that they could not do this until 8pm. After a brief discussion bert and I decided that we did not want to wait an hour, we didn't know what to do, we had it all planned out, there was nothing else for it we returned to the Ship and had a very enjoyable fish and chips there, but were annoyed at Piggy for misleading potential customers!

Our message is simple:
If you say that you do takeaway please make sure you also make it clear that this may not always be available. Other reviewers have indicated that you need to pre-order earlier in the day and collect, but there is nothing that says this on the board outside. We would have done this had we known! It must also be really annoying for customers sitting in, having people walking in all the time!

We did not get a chance to taste any fish and chips so this is by know means a review of the food, trouble is I don't think we would go here or recommend it after this experience.

We are not a traditional fish and chip shop with a large range in our kitchen but have an overwhelming demand for our takeaway meals.
Since every meal is cooked to order (we do not have any fish or chips being held in a hot cabinet) we do operate a booking system which we have found to be the best solution and has been highly successful both for our local customers and visitors. We have 2 large notices outside the premises stating this. However when the local campsites and caravan parks are full at the height of the season delays can occur and for this we apologise.

“Best fish ever and lovely staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

The first time we called in for take away we realised this is a special place as they were backed up with orders and couldnt help. But we made a reservation for following night and took the cbildren and the dog. Fab food all frezhly prepared - large or ordinary sized fish -arge was huge. Lovely homemade curry sauce, best ever. Mashed potato and veg available which were cooked to perfection. Various delicious pies all homemade - gorgeous. We ordered a battered sausage for the dog which came out hopped up in a doggy bowl for her but only when it was cooler! Really lovely and weve bookdd again.

“Best fish and chips!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

If you are in Porlock or within the vicinity then this is definitely the place to eat - some of the best fish and chips I have had!

A lovely family owned restaurant, they are so busy that you can't sit in on Friday evenings...well worth it though! Can't recommend it enough!

One of the best fish and chips I have had in a long time my only complaint was that I has the small and should of order the large as it was so nice. A family owned and well worth a visit if your in town.

“Nice pies shame about Basil Faulty”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

Popped in for a takeaway pie and chips tonight while camping in Porlock and must admit our food was good quality ( especially the pies ) and the price very reasonable ( £9.70 for two pie and chips ). However the man serving was to be frank very rude to most people who arrived after me. Apparently they couldn't cope with anymore takeaway orders for another hour and a half, which is fair enough, but honestly you would of thought people had asked for something completely unreasonable by the way he spoke. Ironically there is a photo collage on the wall of an episode of Fawlty Towers! A shame because the pies were nice.
