“Delighted, look forward to staying again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2011 via mobile

Booked this for my wifes birthday weekend away. Never been before but had good reviews that were well deserved. The room was lovely, clean, comfortable and pretty. As well as hot drnks facilities in room a tin of Meryl's delicious home made biscuits. The food was delicious and nothing was too much trouble for our lovely hosts. When my daughter and her partner arrived to visit for the day, afternoon tea AND coffee with homemade cakes for 4 was produced with a big smile at no extra charge. We loved our stay and look forward to our next visit. Great value for money.

Glen Lodge offers a quiet retreat in a stunning position. It is roomy, homely and very comfortable. Meryl the owner could not have been more welcoming and friendly. She even got a Farmers Weekly magazine delivered for breakfast! You can walk directly out of the garden up into the heart of Exmoor Forest and onto the highest point on Exmoor. The extra goodies at breakfast (home made muffins!) served as our packed lunch. She is friendly to dogs having a boot room where they can stay (NB not in the house). We had the supper option but it was more of a 4 star dinner. Tea and cakes were waiting for us when we returned from our walk. We can highly recommend staying here and a big thank you to Meryl. Room Tip: Views of the sea from rooms at the front.

Porlock is just gorgeous and the location of this B&B is pretty special - high up on a hill overlooking it all. If you don't like walking or driving up a steep slope, this won't be for you, but I liked it.
I was surprised to find myself in a room different to the one I'd thought I'd booked – and it didn't have an ensuite. It looked as though a few of the rooms don't, so be sure to check.
The rooms could definitely do with a refresh and so could the bedding – my bedspread looked rather worn and actually had some blood spots on it. Not at all nice.
Housekeeping is hit and miss, happened one day, not the next (although I stayed 3 nights). Also, shared tables at breakfast was a bit awkward - sitting in silence with other people is never nice. Was a strange atmosphere, some guests seemed to be treated better than others, let's just say.
Still, I would recommend it as a special place to stay given the history of the gorgeous building and it's lovely setting high up in the glades.

I do so wish you had said something - particularly with the bedspread issue. I have checked all of them (which I regularly do as I do the laundry and ironing) and can't find it but will keep a closer eye. With regard to missing your room on cleaning schedule one day, I sincerely apologise. We do try to make everyone as welcome as possible with high cleaning standards and are so sorry that we fell down on this occasion. With regard to the breakfast tables, as you know we have two one which seats up to four and one which seats up to six and its the luck of the draw when you come down as to where there is availability. Which is also one reason we get the papers in each morning for those who don't wish to chat. Also if you had wanted a table to yourself we could have arranged this possibly with timing.

Wonderful place to stay if you are touring this area, situated at the end of a road surrounded by well kept gardens, very peaceful. Hosts were terrific, very welcoming, warm and helped us plan our day trips. The house is quite old, some damp and you could hear people talking in the lounge if your bedroom was on the first floor. However, this did not distract from a very pleasant stay and would certainly stay here again. Breakfasts were great!

My stay at the glenlodge was positive in every way. Nice location, lovely room which was spotlessly clean and had a great view, nice lounge to sit in and have a cup of tea, friendly hosts, tasty breakfast.
It is a bit away from the centre of the village (7 mins walk) but therefor very quiet.

Meryl and David are are the perfect hosts. We were welcomed with tea and cakes on the terrace, where we sat until the sun went down in the valley. Porlock was a short walk each evening where we especially enjoyed our meals at the Piggy in the Middle restaurant. Guests have use of the library and comfortable sitting room. Breakfasts were truly delicious with a great choice of cereals, fresh fruit and Meryl's muffin of the day. This was followed by American style pancakes, smoked fish or any variation on the tradiitonal English breakfast. Our room (foxglove) was spacious and comfortable with a view down the valley to the Bristol channel and Wales. We hope to return to explore more of the beautiful countryside and walks along the coast and across the moor. David could not have been more helpful in providing advice and maps of suitable walks

Glen Lodge is a homely and unpretentious 19th-century house decorated with a dash of arty, old-world charm, some vast pieces of antique furniture and has commanding views across the village to the channel coastline. Our room was a large upper room with a fine, far-reaching view. We had our own generously-proportioned bathroom next to the bedroom, with a non-overlooked window onto the woodland slope and rhododendrons. The morning birdsong was spectacular.

When we arrived, we were treated to Meryl’s delicious speciality tea and cakes on the terrace deck overlooking the mature garden where it drops away down the hill, intersected by a rushing stream.

In the evenings, we took the short, pretty walk down into Porlock and ate in one of the various restaurants and pubs in the village. Our favourite was the questionably named Piggy’s, which had fresh-cooked tasty food. On the first day we took the hiking route up from the house through the woods onto the heathland above and down into West Luccombe village with its trademark cob cottages.

Meryl and David are warm and laid-back hosts and Meryl has several gastronomic items on the breakfast menu, including kippers. Guests can borrow walking guides, maps or other books from the informal library in the front room and there’s a speciality hiking shop in the village and also a small museum.

All in all, a B&B which generates a feeling of wellbeing.

Room Tip: There are two large rooms on first and second floor facing the best view across the village.
