“Comfortable town centre hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2012

Stayed here for a function, had a large and comfortable room at the front of the hotel. Tea and coffee making facilities in room were handy. Tv etc. Roomy bathroom with nice toiletries. Comfy bed. Breakfast included which was lovely. Reasonable rates. Enjoyable and comfortable stay.

Nice menu, different items from the usually pub grub. I had home made shortcrust pasty lamb and apricot pie love.

Decent food at decent prices. Nothing special. Shame about the mass produced bread in the ploughman's: the bread should be the centrepiece of a Ploughman's, not an afterthought.

We stayed in a small family room which could have done with a bit of TLC. There was evidence of water leaks on the external wall. Other than that the room was comfortable enough.
We had dinner and breakfast which were both very good and well presented.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Only down side was the noise from the street outside until 3.30 am. Gives some credence to the lager lout culture that grabs so many of the headlines in recent years. Shame because it spoilt our stay and it is totally not the hotels fault.

Pleasant staff, breakfast was good but the room was a bit disappointing. The bathroom was clean on the surface but there was black mould between the tiles. The walls were dirty and in need of a fresh coat of paint. The furnishings in the room were nice and gave the room a bit of a facelift but it wasn't enough to detract from the dirty walls. There is secure parking but it is not easy to access and the guests are expected to lock and unlock the gate to the carpark. I probably wouldn't stay there again.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2012

Stayed in room 202 (twin smoking room) for two nights in January 2012.

As just about every other reviewer has mentioned, this hotel is badly in need of total refurbishment. Most of the carpets are threadbare in places and it looks as though it has not seen a lick of paint for years.

Having said that, we had a comfortable stay. The beds provided a restful night's sleep and the bed linen was clean. The tea, coffee and sugar provided was generous and the bath was large enough to relax in and hot water was plentiful.

There is a definite shortage of staff, but the staff they DO have are helpful and courteous. Their reception is usually unmanned and when I had to complain about a problem with the phone not working to the person behind the bar, he had to leave the bar unattended to come to the room to try and resolve the problem.

Full marks to The George for not treating smokers as pariahs, like a lot of other hotels do. Being able to enjoy a cigarette in the comfort of our room was a luxury that compensated for the less than luxurious surroundings.

Another plus is the secure parking they offer, although access to the underground car park is designed to test even the most careful driver. The scrapes on the pillars near the entrance bore testament to those that failed.

£75 a night for a very average hotel is a little on the high side, as is the price of their drinks. One would hope that some of their extra profit is spent on extra staff and re-decoration before my next visit.

I would certainly use the George again, if only to reward them for their accommodating attitude towards the smoking fraternity.

Stayed here for one night on Thursday 10th November 2011, when on the Adam Ant tour. If you are planning on attending a gig at the Cheese and Grain, stay here. Reasonable prices, prime location, adequate room, friendly staff, good food, and nice ale (though expensive).Would stay again.
