“Wonderful place to eat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2013

The quality of food and service has been fantastic since the new incumbents, Alison and Iain, arrived. Not only are they excellent chefs but they helpful friendly and welcoming. Would happily recommend the Cross Guns to anyone.
With the various offers on different nights the costs are very reasonable.

“Good and bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

We went for food on a Wednesday evening after a walk. We did try to ring first, but got no answer, still it was a Wednesday. When we arrived it was full - we found out later it was "Curry night". We said we would sit outside in the twilight - but then a table became available in the bar. We said that we had rung up first, but the landlord said that he was "too busy dealing with the 25 people in the restaurant" to answer the phone. Still we were grateful for the table.

The menu was brightly designed with standard pub favourites, grills, baked potatoes, etc, the back page devoted to the different curries, but was quite confusing with all the "offers". On a separate menu were a list of meals which you could get 2 for £10, which we only saw later. As it was we had lasagne £8 and Baked Potato with cheese and beans £4, so ended up paying more. Curry night involved a free pint, hence why it was so busy, but you could also have curry any night. 50p extra for large this and that, offers here and there, yes, it seemed and looked like a McDonalds menu. Surely not the impression you want to make ?

Anyway, we stated with a large glass of Shiraz each, and it was really nice and smooth, and only £4. Excellent value and quality for a pub. However, our meals, which arrived suspiciously quickly, were not. Maybe we didn't choose the best options, maybe all the effort was going into the curries that night, but the lasagne was sloppy and tasted like a microwave one, and the baked potato was covered in a sort of "cow and gate" cheesy-bean mix.

I'd like to try the curries one day, especially as they have some very spicy options, but I have a feeling I'd be disappointed.
