“We took over rather!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

As a group of us were taking part in a convention in Telford we took every room in the Gaskell Arms! The rooms are like mini suites with extra little sitting areas and huge bathrooms compared to other similar aged places we have stayed which all worked and were very clean (most important to us ladies!. The staff were pretty Jolly, particularly on the Friday when we arrived on mass.
The rooms in the outer area were even bigger than the older ones in the original building - so big in fact all 20 of us managed to fit in to the living area of one of them!
I did find the main food prices a little expensive but it was not extortionate and what we ate was extremely good so worth paying for. The breakfast choices were good and the coffee was excellent.
There is also a big car park so they could take the coach we came on and several cars in and just outside the walled area.
In all a great little place to stay - we really enjoyed visiting Much Wenlock and the Gaskill Arms was a welcoming and warm environment and we appreciated all the efforts the staff went to so we could have a very enjoyable stay. Thank you.

We stayed at the Gaskell Arms as a family of four. It was a bad experience from the moment we arrived.
Upon booking in, we were informed that the person who had been in our room up to us arriving had gone off with a key and was still staying at the hotel. We were given a spare key and told to leave it in the key hole to stop him coming in!!!
The receptionist was rather miserable, and in my opinion should not work in any form of customer services.
The room was big enough, but had problems.
The shower didn't work properly, the sink taps wouldn't turn off fully unless you had the incredible hulk's arms! The double bed creaked and squeaked every time either of us turned over during the night. As a light sleeper, this was totally unacceptable!
The only light in the twin bedroom came from a small lamp. No ceiling lights at all. Permanently felt dark in here.
The rubbish bin lid was completely smashed.
Numerous cobwebs on the ceiling in the twin room. The door to the fridge was coming off its hinges and didn't fit properly.

I tried a pint of Abbots ale in the bar. This was served warm. I mentioned this to the barman who said he didn't know why. I commented that it may be because it had been sat in the pipes for a while. His reply was, "yes, I haven't sold any of that today!" No offer to replace it with a fresh one either!
The only good point was the waitress who dealt with our breakfasts on both days. She was excellent and attentive and as such, must be commended. (Shame about all the others).
The taps and bed were sorted after the first night.
When we checked out the person dealing with us never even asked if everything had been ok. There wasn't even the usual "I hope to see you again soon."
That was just as well, as I don't think we will ever return to this place.
We only came to the Gaskell as a hotel we had already booked, had doubled booked us. The cost was very expensive for the accomodation and service provided.
Hugely disappointed, to say the least!

We had a very good stay in this historic Hotel with its 18th Century front windows and beams on the ceiling downstairs. We were cheerfully greeted by the young receptionist and taken up to our room on the first floor, there is no lift but they special provisions for people with Disabilities and the receptionist offered to bring up our case.
The room was comfortable and very clean, in the room was teas and coffees with biscuits. They have a large modern television. Plenty of storage to put your clothes. The bathroom is nearly as big as the main room everything worked alright except the shower. It is a mixer but it was either to hot or to cold no in between. We had a very comfortable quiet nights sleep even though we had a front room which looked onto a very busy cross roads, these roads are very quiet at night also the windows are double glazed.
We had some evening meals in the bar which is small and cosy with a fire place in the middle and beams on the ceiling. The service and quality of the food was very good with smiles and being very helpful.
We had our breakfast in their restaraunt again service is very good and helpful starters was a buffet. The cooked meals was always plentiful and hot
A good car park at the back and I noticed by the car park there is a single storie wing with a number of rooms.
I think the hotel is value for money they just want to improve their showers and yes I would go there again.
Much Wenlock is a good central point for touring South Shropshire and Herefordshire.

Room Tip: If possible go for the front rooms as they are light and airy

I've stayed at the Gaskell before, but not in the actual building itself. The room I was given was huge - complete with a bathroom I'd have been happy to sleep in, had a bed been provided! The Wifi didn't appear to work (in fact, it wasn't even picked up by my iPad), but that's hardly a deal breaker if you're getting away from it all for a couple of days. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was excellent, and the whole feel of the room (number 7 - 'Olympian Way') was really tranquil and quiet - especially given the busy road outside!

But the icing on the cake was the breakfast. I've stayed in lots of places, and never had a breakfast like the one provided by the Gaskell. Freshly (and perfectly) cooked to order, great quality ingredients, including possibly the best sausage I've ever tasted, friendly service, and no 'late' breakfast just because it was Sunday (can't understand why some hotels think that you don't need to eat until later, just because it's Sunday...)

Overall, it's a great base to explore the town, and Wenlock Edge - and the perfect base for visiting Festival At The Edge - possibly the best storytelling festival in the UK. Recommended - especially for the breakfast!

Room Tip: I can tell you that Room 7 is comfortable, and huge. The Rindlesham Suite (which has its own outside...

Stayed here for three nights. A good location in Much Wenlock even though on a busy cross roads. The first disappointment was the advertised wi fi didn't work in our bedroom, though reception was good down stairs
Excellent room but a bit on the small side, very bright and airy and it had everything we needed. Comfortable bed and a full size bath, but it took a long time (and a lot of water) before the hot water reached us. Good service with extra milks and tea available in our room.
We ate in the bar the first night, the menu was mediocre, the fish was over cooked and my wife's cottage pie was very sloppy and not enjoyable. We went to the Talbot in the high street for dinner the next two nights that was excellent and recommended.
I am sure it was not intentional but somehow the price on my bill was £10 higher than the booked online price this was corrected but shouldn't have happened
Overall good room but poor bar food

We stayed here last June and reviewed this hotel as excellent.
The staff made it so.
We did have a problem with our shower, low pressure, but were offered better accomodation if required.
The chef's special were varied and tasty.
The real ale was well kept.
The huge car park is ideal it seems for firms ,on our stay, cyclists with a holiday company for example.
