My wife and I like to go for a walk on a Sunday and Wantage market square is just the right distance, a couple of miles away so far away to enjoy the countryside before lunch, close enough to wander back from after a meal. We have tried several local restaurants but are usually disappointed with the food on offer, especially Sunday roasts. But at The Bear, the food is exceptionally good; the Sunday Road uses excellent beef that is cooked to perfection - slightly pink in the middle, little (if any) fat and simply delicious! The accompanying vegetables are freshly prepared, served in their own bowl with an excellent gravy boat. As Sunday Roasts go, this is one of the best I've had - and only £10.00! I have also tried the Venison medallions (including a little venison pie on the side that the chef made - lovely flavour) and some of the desserts, all of which have been tasty. Wantage is not exactly known for its restaurant scene, the choices are usually very cheap and cheerful or darn expensive, so it is nice to have found somewhere that really does offer a decent lunch. Good idea to book a table, the place is normally quite full, they have quite a lot of families with kids but most are well behaved, whilst for the past few times we have been there, they have had large family gatherings celebrating birthdays / anniversaries, etc. Recommended.
