“Special Family Lunch, rendered not quite so special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Although luckily not the organiser was invited to a family lunch for 15 people in the room at the back of the main restaurant. The hotel insisted on a deposit before we were able to see the menu and then when the menu was provided it was so restrictive we tried to cancel but they wouldnt provide back the deposit. So in the end crammed into a room at the back of the hotel that seems quite some way from the hotel carpark (which is an adventure in itself trying to find) our starters consisted of bread rolls, with butter. we asked for more butter and more rolls and was bemused to find a plate of sliced white breach being presented to us. For the main course the children were served beef burger (not mini burgers as stated on the set menu, chicken goujons and sausages and chips. I can only assume it was some kind of sausage medley each each of the three sausages that came out was a different size and shape to its neighbour. The majority of the room had fish and chips (not much else to choose from) which was 2 reasonable sized white fish fillets (i hesitate to describe it as cod, i would guess it was much cheaper pollock) with what i would describe as fried jacket potato wedges (skin on), these were ok but not the chips that one would expect to be served with fish. I would also add that there was a spoonful of mushy peas on the side, but I wouldnt describe these as a portion. Dessert was cheese and biscuits or profilteroles. neither of which were memorable and we had to ask for knives to accompany the cheese. Topped off by an extremely hot room that just felt too small for the number of people it was accomodating overall we were very happy to be able to get up and leave.

This hotel is VERY expensive for what it offers: absolutely basic room facilities in a very pokey and small room with a boarding-school quality single bed, towel rail that comes off in your hand, etc, etc.

The piece de resistance, however, was having to step over gatherings of hotel cleaning staff sitting in the landing between corridors, eating and gossiping, virtually ALL day, as well as having to negotiate one's way through small mountains of balled up, dirty linen from various rooms, also left, fetchingly, for guests' viewing pleasure, in the landings between corridors.

Staff in the restaurant and bar were very friendly and helpful, but left high and dry and unable to cope because there were way too few of them on shift (both the bar staff at night and the staff waiting tables at breakfast in the morning).

The management of this hotel need a serious wake up call. Until such time as that's happened, stay in the TravelLodge up the road instead: at least they're honest about what they are and what they offer you for your money.

Room was quaint, clean and comfortable. Good breakfast. I would stay again. Function room was a good size. Food was adequate, but as it was a function we didn't have a choice, so difficult to comment. Just glad we had a good lunch en route!

Room Tip: Don't have a room on the landing

This venue has all the makings of turning itself into a gem of a hotel but it needs to invest. Bar and restaurant are really well put together and very friendly. But rooms - certainly the one we stayed in - are very tired. Couldn't take a shower as water temperature just way too hot and could not be adjusted. Cracked tiling and in need of a big revamp. Room service after 930pm did not seem to exist. So....go on...invest in this place and it could be great.

Recently went to a charity function in the Fothergill suite. The food was terrible, pate without toast? White bread hurriedly bought from Sainsbury's. The main course arrived for only half the table and then vegetables 20 minutes later and finally another 20 minutes for the rest of the table. Grossly understaffed by poor inexperienced kids. Premium prices for poor service. Perhaps of a makeover they should have invested in more kitchen and waiting staff?

Didn't stay the night although attended a local school ball which we have done for years but at other locations......what a total disappointment!!! There were the choice of 4 main courses each choice was bought out separately so by the time the last dish was delivered the person eating the first choice delivered has finished! The bread which accompanied the meal was bought from the local supermarket, which was cheap white bread cut into triangles chucked in a bowel and left on table. The butter came found after we finished. Portion control was non existent I had a cm of soup while another on our table was full to the brim, salmon was no bigger than a fish finger while others had half a side! And to top if all off it was all Luke warm! No service at the table for drinks, coffeespilt down my ball dress when served! The auction that night had one lot for a table of four to return for a meal, the first offer was 50p, say no more, the guy in charge that night had a right earful from most tables. Such a shame for the local school although all said and done at least the company of our friends was excellent!!! Never will we return!!! Think twice before booking an event here big or small!

We spent three nights at this hotel and were very comfortable. The bedroom and bathroon were both quite large, and we booked a refurbished room at the back of the hotel, overlooking a small garden area. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. The furniture in the room wasn't very efficient. There was a five drawer chest unit, and the drawers were shallow and stiff and sticky to open and close. The wardrobe was spacious and there was a safe and hairdryer in there.

All the staff at the hotel were extremely courteous and helpful.

The breakfast was not the best we've ever had - but it was adequate. There was a small selection of fruit and fruit juice served, but we felt none of it was very fresh. The melon I had the first morning wasn't crisp and tasted bad. Our friend had Eggs Benedict - but there was no spinach in it and the sauce wasn't very appetising - didn't look like Eggs Benedict should at all. There was a choice of cereal and plenty of toast and preserves.

The hotel is very well located on Cornmarket. It is easy to walk around Thame from this location. We had a lovely evening meal at The Thatch.

Room Tip: Rooms at back of hotel are quieter. Refurbished rooms are better.
