“A hidden treasure of a place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

This place was recommended to us by a member of staff at the nearby Travelodge who were fully booked when we needed overnight accommodation and we are so glad they did. The room was beautiful and immaculately clean. Crisp white bedding and thick fluffy white towels. Beautiful! A lot of thought, time and effort has gone into making the rooms and your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The food was just amazing and the staff all went out of their way to make our dining experience and overnight stay memorable for all the right reasons. Excellent value for money, with a delicious breakfast included in the price and an added bonus of a reduced room rate because we had eaten a 3 course meal in the dining room last night. I was tired and really fed up when I arrived, having spent the whole day (my birthday!) in a van while my husband collected various pieces of junk he had bought on ebay, but he did redeem himself slightly by finding this hidden treasure of a hotel. It would have been useful to have the internet security code for the excellent free wi-fi displayed in the hotel room, perhaps, but a very kind member of staff walked up several flights of stairs to bring it to me! My only complaint is........I wish they were closer to where we live in Cornwall, so we could go there again soon! Unfortunately we don't get up to that area often, but we now have an extremely good excuse to go there!!

This was our second visit to the Markham Hotel and Restaurant. Although the first visit was only for the evening meal, this was the first time that we had used the hotel as well. My partner is a coeliac with special dietary needs and the staff went out of their way to buy in specific foods to cater to her needs. From entering the establishment to the time that we left, the level of service and attention from the staff was second to none. The whole hotel/restaurant was absolutely spotless. We would definitely rate this as five star service, fantastic food, beautiful and comfortable accommodation and a level of service that puts many pricier establishments to shame. Not only that, but the final surprise came when paying our bill and found that because we had booked the restaurant as well, there was a discount on the cost of the room.
The hotel is situated on the Retford Road, just off the the Markham Moor junction of the A1, which makes it convenient for either north, south, or east or westbound travelers (A57 going east from this junction, towards Lincoln, whilst 5 miles further north on the A1, the A57 westbound to Worksop, Sheffield and Manchester. Although close by the A1, it was far enough away to be shielded from most road noise.
We would definitely recommend this hotel for any occasion and will definitely be returning later in the year.

fantastic food, great atmosphere, rooms comfy, service was brilliant and the beer not to bad either, the bar is a little small but that adds to the quaintness of the place, a nice traditional friendly place, though a little cold the kids could play in the grassed fenced off play area while we enjoyed a pre dining pint

I've stayed here before about three years ago and got the same room again this stay. I went for the non en-suite as it was business and wanted to keep costs down. Had some food in the bar that night which was excellent, pint wasn't great.
Room was as it was the last time, quite a bit of road noise and a bit chilly at first. Bathroom is clean and shower is not bad either. Had a comfy nights sleep and breakfast in the morning was nice. I would stay there again if needed although for a non en-suite I though it was a little expensive compared to what I've stayed in locally. But all in all you don't have to go anywhere else for food which is nice food and reasonably priced and the room was comfortable.

good reviews for food, but when you go to the bar you will have to wait 10 to 15 minutes to get served as food comes first also the heating in hotel only comes on at 5 o'clock, and no facilities fir smokers- not my best experience

After a long haul north to south, we decided to break the journey, and having stopped at retford did a quick search.
Lucky us - we got room 1, a very big, lovely ensuite double, for £65 inc cooked breakfast straight off the street.
Nice bar - although we didn't try the restaurant as we opted for the nearby china moon (which was very very good - see my separate review of that) and genuinely friendly and helpful staff.
A couple of things to be aware off - as they are a small hotel there is no reception after 11.30 and before 6.30. This effectively means you need to be in the hotel by 11.30 or you get locked out, and you can't be away before 6.30. Not sure what happens if you get caught in traffic, best ring ahead if you are...
Also, as breakfast is cooked to order they ask you to nominate a time and specify what you want the night before, which some people might consider a pain. Breakfast is served 7-9 so not too bad.
Overall a surprisingly homely find and an affordable luxury after a day on the road.
