“Comfortable...Sadly Lacking Attention to Detail”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

First impressions of the Hotel are very good. Ideally located just off the motorway, situated on its own next to Blyth town. Plenty of free parking and situated with lots of garden and open space. The hotel is basic in that there are for example no gym facilities, pool or jacuzzi and the such. As we were attending a wedding this was of no consequence to us. The hotel is ideally situated to explore the surrounding countryside and various points of interest - Mr Straws House and Clumber Park to name but two.

We were greeted warmly by the receptionist and check in was quick. You can definitely tell that the bedrooms have had a recent refurbishment and my wife and I had no issues with the bedroom itself. The bed was comfortable, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, tea, coffee and biscuits in terms of refreshments. However, the rest of the hotel looks a tad tired and dated. I would say that this is still acceptable and did not cause any real issues.

The reason I was disappointed in our stay is that there seemed to be a lack if attention to detail. For example:

Our TV remote was not working. I reported this to reception on our first night, and despite a second visit to reception on our second night, we left with the control still not working. We were able to use the TV but whilst in bed, we were unable to switch the TV off.
There was no soap in either the hand basin or shower. Reception were quick to give us several bottles and explained housekeeping would replenish these the next day. When this did not happen, I was told the dispensers were now obsolete (so why have them?)
There was no milk in our room for the teas and coffees. Once again once I reported this it was sorted but this really should have been checked by housekeeping.
The breakfast area was dirty. There was a dead bug on the window sill and the floor was not the cleanest it could have been.
The butter dish on our table was dirty.
Breakfast was served on our first day by a colleague who used her cardigan sleeves as a substitute for oven gloves/tea towel (the plates were warm).
Breakfast itself was ok but choice was limited. I compared what was on offer and what was on display and there were inconsistencies e.g I could not see any fresh fruit, breads, nor cheese and biscuits.

Having said all this, my wife and I would stay here again. I most definitely think a little care and attention and other reviewers would certainly be inclined to give a much better score - as I would have done.

The hotel is a little "tired" but not too, too bad overall. Certainly the room is clean and spacious. The major downside as a business traveller is the lack of wi-fi. Couldn't get signed in which was pain. The room is very good value and the food is good value - it's not about to win awards but portions are filling and it's not claiming to be anything it's not and price-wise it's good. Reasonable choice too.
Breakfast is cooked to order and freshly prepared and ample. Happy to return

Had a really friendly welcome despite the late hour of arrival due to the traffic. The room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The excellent breakfast was ample and freshly prepared. Lovely garden and peaceful location.

We booked the hotel and American Drifters Tribute night to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary. We booked 13 rooms in all, and were upgraded to the Honeymoon Suite inc a bottle of very nice Champagne. The food was great, the Drifters were fantastic, the disco a bit disappointing. The staff throughout our stay were very good. Our guests only had good things to say about the rooms, my only observation being that the two single guests were given large rooms with king size beds, which should really have been given to couples! I don't think we could have had a better night, and at a very reasonable cost.

We stayed here on 2/8/13. The first room was ok, but on getting back to the room about 11pm we found that there was not enough water coming out of the shower to drown a rat! Off to reception to complain, after 10 minutes of walking round the deserted hotel, i found a member of staff who swiftly changed our room to a superior room (38). We dragged our bags up there to find it overlooked the wedding marquee and there was a booming disco ongoing, shouting guests and a lot of noise. Back to reception again and we were changed to our third room No 46. This was far quieter so I jumped in the shower, to find that you couldn't change the water temperature of the shower so nearly scolded myself. Back to reception for a fourth time, they were very understanding and helpful, and gave us a key to another room so we could use that shower. All in all for £70 it was overpriced and not what I would have expected for that money. The rooms were tidy if not a little run down. The staff were helpful and agreed a refund. The attention to detail in the hotel was poor, hole in sheets, dirty flannel left on floor of bathroom, dirty teaspoons, no milk for the tea making facilities. All in all disapointing!

We stayed here on Saturday night and found this to be a lovely, friendly hotel. Our room which was room 38 was very clean and miles bigger than I thought it would be so was pleasantly surprised. We had a meal on the night in the hotel which was very nice and the breakfast in the morning was very filling with plenty to choose from. We found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating, especially Amy, told you we would mention you by name :-). We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone. Thank you

We got married nearly a year ago here and there were a few problems on our special day. One being that the bridal suite we booked - we ended up trying our best to not spend too long in due to the air conditioning not working on the day of our wedding, which was red hot. Because of this I've come on trip advisor to see if there are many good reviews since our stay to see if it will be worth booking a night stay for our anniversary. It looks like from the recent reviews the breakfast has gone down hill a little as it was brilliant when we stayed. Some of the issues we had on our big day ruined it for us as speeches had to cut short (again due to the air con not working - which we later found out the reason was due to the former GM rather than a technical fault) Our cakes were ruined also as staff left them out. Some staff were very helpful and friendly back then but others not so. It seems like there are still quite a few bad reviews. This really is a beautiful setting for a wedding. It's just a shame there still seems to be a few things that let it down. Hmm undecided now whether to book again :/

Thank you for your comments.
I am a little unsure as to why after 12 months you have chosen to review the hotel with out actually returning to us. We have taken the hotel out of administration and are working very hard with the local community and suppliers to rebuild the Charnwood Hotel. I have looked back over the records at the hotel and have noted your comments and with out going into too much why when and how's I am led to believe that you were compensated for the disappointing service and standards received at your wedding.
That not with standing the hotel is under new management with a new kitchen team we have already obtained recognition from this site and are striving to improve all the time.
Perhaps when you have decided you would like to return to the Charnwood please do not Hesitate to contact me direct so I may ensure your stay is pleasurable and everything you would expect from the Charnwood
