First impressions of the Hotel are very good. Ideally located just off the motorway, situated on its own next to Blyth town. Plenty of free parking and situated with lots of garden and open space. The hotel is basic in that there are for example no gym facilities, pool or jacuzzi and the such. As we were attending a wedding this was of no consequence to us. The hotel is ideally situated to explore the surrounding countryside and various points of interest - Mr Straws House and Clumber Park to name but two.
We were greeted warmly by the receptionist and check in was quick. You can definitely tell that the bedrooms have had a recent refurbishment and my wife and I had no issues with the bedroom itself. The bed was comfortable, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, tea, coffee and biscuits in terms of refreshments. However, the rest of the hotel looks a tad tired and dated. I would say that this is still acceptable and did not cause any real issues.
The reason I was disappointed in our stay is that there seemed to be a lack if attention to detail. For example:
Our TV remote was not working. I reported this to reception on our first night, and despite a second visit to reception on our second night, we left with the control still not working. We were able to use the TV but whilst in bed, we were unable to switch the TV off.
There was no soap in either the hand basin or shower. Reception were quick to give us several bottles and explained housekeeping would replenish these the next day. When this did not happen, I was told the dispensers were now obsolete (so why have them?)
There was no milk in our room for the teas and coffees. Once again once I reported this it was sorted but this really should have been checked by housekeeping.
The breakfast area was dirty. There was a dead bug on the window sill and the floor was not the cleanest it could have been.
The butter dish on our table was dirty.
Breakfast was served on our first day by a colleague who used her cardigan sleeves as a substitute for oven gloves/tea towel (the plates were warm).
Breakfast itself was ok but choice was limited. I compared what was on offer and what was on display and there were inconsistencies e.g I could not see any fresh fruit, breads, nor cheese and biscuits.
Having said all this, my wife and I would stay here again. I most definitely think a little care and attention and other reviewers would certainly be inclined to give a much better score - as I would have done.
